Description: The roots of our modern world lie in the civilization of Mesopotamia, which saw the development of the first urban society and the invention of writing. The cuneiform texts reveal the technological and social innovations of Sumer and Babylonia as surprisingly modern, and the influence of this fascinating culture was felt throughout the Near East. Early Mesopotamia gives an entirely new account, integrating the archaeology with historical data which until now have been largely scattered in specialist literature.

Description: From the middle of the 3rd millennium BC until the coming of Cyrus the Great, southwestern Iran was referred to in Mesopotamian sources as the land of Elam. A heterogeneous collection of regions, Elam was home to a variety of groups, alternately the object of Mesopotamian aggression, and aggressors themselves; an ethnic group seemingly swallowed up by the vast Achaemenid Persian empire, yet a force strong enough to attack Babylonia in the last centuries BC. The Elamite language is attested as late as the Medieval era, and the name Elam as late as 1300 in the records of the Nestorian church. This book examines the formation and transformation of Elam's many identities through both archaeological and written evidence, and brings to life one of the most important regions of Western Asia, re-evaluates its significance, and places it in the context of the most recent archaeological and historical scholarship.

Description: A collection of essays put together by colleagues, friends, and students of William M. Sumner to honor his contribution to Iranian archaeology and archaeological field methodology. Topical contributions emphasize the methodological aspects of analysis of survey data, while regional contributions focus on two of the main geographical areas studied by archaeologists in Iran: the southwest and the northwest. Papers primarily concern the fifth to second millennia BCE in the southwest and the first millennium BCE in both areas. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume is of interest to Iranists, as well as students of general ancient and modern Near Eastern studies. Several themes recur: the relations between mobile and sedentary peoples; the difficulty of identifying political or cultural boundaries; and the importance of geographical factors in understanding sociocultural phenomena.

Description: This new examination of the reign of Nebuchadrezzar II of Babylon (605-562 B.C.) includes a revised interpretation of the Babylonian Chronicles of his reign, especially for the years of the campaign against Judah and the capture of Jerusalem. On the basis of textual evidence, the author assesses the character of Nebuchadrezzar as a military and political leader, religious devotee, and legal administrator.

Description: This book tells the vivid story of Sir Austen Henry Layard`s nineteenth-century rediscovery of ancient Assyria and its fabled capital, Nineveh, and of the subsequent collection, dispersal, and frantic twentieth-century reacquisition of Layard`s huge collection of ancient Assyrian art. With previously unpublished photographs, illustrations from rare nineteenth-century sources, and first-hand accounts, the book sheds new light on the history and meaning of Assyrian art and on taste, dealing, and collecting over two centuries.
