Description: The Museum Environment is in two parts; Part I: intended for conservators and museum curators and describes the principles and techniques of controlling the environment so that the potentially damaging effects of light, humidity and air pollution on museum exhibits may be minimised. Part II: the author brings together and summarises information and data, hitherto widely scattered in the literature of diverse fields, which is essential to workers in conservation research.
Since the timely publication of the first two editions of this book in hardback, interest in preventive conservation has continued to grow strongly making publication of this paperback edition all the more welcome. Those whose responsibility it is to care for the valuable and beautiful objects in the world's collections have become increasingly aware that it is better to prevent their deterioration, by ensuring that they are housed and displayed in the best possible environmental conditions, than to wait until restoration and repair are necessary. The changes for the second edition have been mainly concentrated in the sections on electronic hygrometry, new fluorescent lamps, buffered cases, air conditioning systems, data logging, and control within historic buildings. A new appendix, giving a summary of museum specificiations for conservation, provides a useful, quick reference.
* New paperback edition of successful text * Now at lower price * Essential reading for conservators and museum curators and scientists

Description: Conservation scientists in museums and galleries have a clear understanding of the damage that light can inflict on an object, but what of the designers that create exhibitions to display these precious items? Light for Arts Sake provides a basis for a level of professional expertise for lighting practice in museums. Rather than portraying conservation and display as having diametrically opposed objectives, the central concept is that the interaction of light and art media is the source for both the visual experience and the degradation of the artwork. Optimal solutions derive from understanding and controlling the interaction process, and the need is for the level of understanding among lighting professionals to be brought closer to that found among conservation scientists.
* Considers the conservation needs of an object in the context of the lighting design process
* Includes philosophical, conservation, and practical aspects of lighting design for museums and galleries
* Useful appendices provide details for easy access to materials and services discussed in the text

Description: Museums are often stereotyped as dusty storage facilities for ancient artefacts considered important by only a handful of scholars. Recently there has been effort on the part of some museumologists to reconsider the role and responsibilities of museums, art galleries and science centres as integral social institutions in their communities. The book attempts to point the way towards a sustainable future for museums by examining institutions that have found creative ways to attain a socially responsive model for cultural resource management. Accessible and engaging, the articles presented here are an excellent starting point for any discussion on what museums have been and what they should strive to be.

Description: Although crossbows are used today exclusively for hunting and target shooting, they played a major role in medieval European warfare. The first of its kind, this trilingual book—in English, German, and Dutch—features a complete inventory of the historical crossbow collection at the Royal Netherlands Army Museum. Richly illustrated with explanatory drawings, Crossbows in the Royal Netherlands Army Museum discusses the full historical range of these powerful weapons, from the middle ages to the early twentieth-century.
