Description: Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's engraving "Coup d'oeil du tha tre Besan on" in which the architect's building is seen reflected in the eye of a viewer, is the center piece in this intellectual archaeology. Rodolphe el-Khoury's close reading of Ledoux's celebrated icon uses it to excavate the foundations of architectural transparency, Modernism's most potent and lasting "invention," which is here traced back to an intellectual milieu that precedes the industrial revolution's glass and steel building technology. The image becomes a site of entry into the culture of the eighteenth century--debates in public health, the political ideas of Rousseau, the philosophy of Condillac, the project of the Encyclopaedie--yielding insights into important philosophical, and architectural issues. The book includes a translation of Ledoux's chapter on the theater from his magnum opus, Considarae Sous le Rapport de l'art, des Moers, et de la Legislation

Description: At the beginning of the 21st century museums are challenged on a number of fronts. The prioritisation of learning in museums in the context of demands for social justice and cultural democracy combined with cultural policy based on economic rationalism forces museums to review their educational purposes, redesign their pedagogies and account for their performance. The need to theorise learning and culture for a cultural theory of learning is very pressing. If culture acts as a process of signification, a means of producing meaning that shapes worldviews, learning in museums and other cultural organisations is potentially dynamic and profound, producing self-identities. How is this complexity to be 'measured'? What can this 'measurement' reveal about the character of museum-based learning? The calibration of culture is an international phenomenon, and the measurement of the outcomes and impact of learning in museums in England has provided a detailed case study. Three national evaluation studies were carried out between 2003 and 2006 based on the conceptual framework of Generic Learning Outcomes. Using this revealing data "Museums and Education" reveals the power of museum pedagogy and as it does, questions are raised about traditional museum culture and the potential and challenge for museum futures is suggested.

Description: Archaeometry is the application of scientific methods and analyses to the study of culture in its archaeological context. Garnered from a conference called to study the material culture from North and South America, the book's twenty essays on a broad range of subjects represent the full scope of study in this field. They include papers by Ron L. Bishop on the compositional analysis of pre-Columbian pottery from the Maya region, Heather Lechtman on the materials science of material culture from the Andes, and J. Michael Elam and others on source identification and hydration dating of obsidian artifacts.

Description: Richly illustrated with more than 160 full-colour plates, Masterworks from the Indiana University Art Museum presents a selection of the finest works from one of the best university art museums in the world. Included are examples from the full range of world cultures collected by the museum: Africa, the Ancient Western World, Asia, Ancient America, the South Pacific, and Western Art before and after 1800. The entry accompanying each piece, by the curator of that collection, sketches the cultural context within which the object was created and used and describes the unique qualities that make it a "masterpiece." In addition to showcasing the research of the museum's highly respected curatorial staff, this handsome volume highlights the remarkable photography of Michael Cavanagh and Kevin Montague, widely regarded as among the premier photographers of fine arts. For students, lovers, and collectors of art, "Masterworks" provides an inspiring and illuminating tour of the world's artistic traditions.

Description: In recent years, museums have developed into multi-dimensional organizations - displaying, preserving and collecting objects which are of increasing interest to the global community. They have adapted to a consumer-oriented world and now compete with other "leisure-time" activities for visitors' time and attention. This text considers an integrated approach to exhibition development from theory to practice. The field of exhibition preparation is a complex one and demands a variety of professional skills. Designers must have creative ability and aesthetic sense as well as considerable skills in writing, management and interpretation. This work examines a wide range of exhibition development concerns, including planning and design of exhibitions, collections, care of exhibits, display evaluation and administration, content and text development for exhibitions and computer usage. It provides a complete outline for all those concerned with providing displays for museums and similar cultural heritage centres.
