Description: Asymmetric catalysis represents still one of the major challenges in modern organic chemistry. Besides the well-established asymmetric metal-complex-catalysed syntheses and biocatalysis, the use of "pure" organic catalysts turned out to be an additional efficient tool for the synthesis of chiral building blocks. In this handbook, the experienced authors from academia and industry provide the first overview of the important use of such metal-free organic catalysts in organic chemistry. With its comprehensive description of numerous reaction types, e.g., nucleophilic substitution and addition reactions as well as cycloadditions and redox reactions, this book targets organic chemists working in industry and academia, and deserves a place in every laboratory.

Description: From the reviews of the First Edition . . . "An excellent text . . . will no doubt provide the benchmark for comparative works for many years." —Journal of the American Chemical Society "A resounding success . . . the definitive current summaries on their respective subjects." —Synthesis Since this important work was first published in 1993, the field of catalytic asymmetric synthesis has grown explosively, spawning effective new methods for obtaining enantiomerically pure compounds on a large scale and stimulating new applications in diverse fields-from medicine to materials science. Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis, Second Edition addresses these rapid changes through new or substantially revised contributions from highly recognized world leaders in the field. It presents detailed accounts of the most important catalytic asymmetric reactions known today, discusses recent advances, and retains from the previous edition essential and intriguing information on the initial development of certain processes. An excellent working resource for academic researchers and industrial chemists alike, the Second Edition features: - Contributions from Noyori, Sharpless, Kagan, Trost, Overman, Shibasaki, Doyle, Okamoto, Bolm, Carreira, and many other internationally renowned authorities
- New chapters on asymmetric carbometallations, asymmetric amplification and autocatalysis, and asymmetric polymerization
- Extended coverage of asymmetric carbene reactions, including asymmetric intramolecular carbene insertion to C-H bonds as well as asymmetric dihydroxylation and aminohydroxylation
- Extended coverage of asymmetric carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions and applications
- An appendix listing all chiral ligands in the book

Description: The use of CeO2-based materials in catalysis has attracted considerable attention in recent years, particularly in applications like environmental catalysis, where ceria has shown great potential. This book critically reviews the most recent advances in the field, with the focus on both fundamental and applied issues. The first few chapters cover structural and chemical properties of ceria and related materials, i.e. phase stability, reduction behaviour, synthesis, interaction with probe molecules (CO, O2, NO), and metal-support interaction - all presented from the viewpoint of catalytic applications. The use of computational techniques and ceria surfaces and films for model catalytic studies are also reviewed. The second part of the book provides a critical evaluation of the role of ceria in the most important catalytic processes: three-way catalysis, catalytic wet oxidation and fluid catalytic cracking. Other topics include oxidation-combustion catalysts, electrocatalysis and the use of cerium catalysts/additives in diesel soot abatement technology.

Description: Zeolites and zeolite-like microporous materials have been playing an ever-increasing role in heterogeneous catalysis for more than three decades. An impressive number of large-scale industrial processes in petroleum refining, petrochemistry and the manufacture of organic chemicals are nowadays carried out using zeolite catalysts, and the future of zeolites in industrial catalysis continues to be bright. Authored by an international team of renowned scientists, the seven chapters of this book present a comprehensive overview of the application of zeolites in industrial catalysis, while also providing a true scientific understanding of how zeolites are synthesized, modified and characterized, and putting special emphasis on shape-selective catalysis, which is a unique feature of zeolites.

Description: Surface science emerged in the 1960s with the development of reliable ultrahigh vacuum apparatus, providing exact structures of surfaces of metal single crystals, information about their compositions, and relationships between surface structure and composition and catalytic reaction rates. Catalysis, the acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst (substance), provided much of the driving force for the early development of surface science.
As surface science continues its rapid development, this book illustrates how it is still driven by the challenges of catalysis and how both theory and scanning tunneling microscopy have forcefully emerged as essential tools. It is also evident how surface science continues to serve as the foundation of catalytic science.
This is a compendium written by leading surface scientists presenting an incisive assessment of up-to-date theoretical and experimental results constituting the foundation of fundamental understanding of surface catalysis.
This paperback edition is adapted from the serial Advances in Catalysis, Volume 45, ISBN: 0-12-007845-7.
COVERAGE INCLUDES: · Dynamics of reactions at surfaces on time scales ranging from 10-13s to 103s · Density functional theory of adsorption and surface chemical reactions · Catalysts in action: atomic-resolution STM images elucidating elementary reactions on surfaces · Adsorption energetics and bonding: femtomole calorimetry and first-principles theory · Active sites on oxide catalysts: from single crystals to powders · Model supported catalysts: metal particles on well-ordered oxide layers · Vibrational spectra of reaction intermediates on catalyst surfaces by sum frequency generation

Description: Reaction Kinetics and the Development and Operation of Catalytic Processes is a trendsetter. The Keynote Lectures have been authored by top scientists and cover a broad range of topics like fundamental aspects of surface chemistry, in particular dynamics and spillover, the modeling of reaction mechanisms, with special focus on the importance of transient experimentation and the application of kinetics in reactor design. Fundamental and applied kinetic studies are well represented. More than half of these deal with transient kinetics, a new trend made possible by recent sophisticated experimental equipment and the awareness that transient experimentation provides more information and insight into the microphenomena occurring on the catalyst surface than steady state techniques. The trend is not limited to purely kinetic studies since the great majority of the papers dealing with reactors also focus on transients and even deliberate transient operation. It is to be expected that this trend will continue and amplify as the community becomes more aware of the predictive potential of fundamental kinetics when combined with detailed realistic modeling of the reactor operation.

Description: With the recent advent of nanotechnology, research and development in the area of nanostructured catalysts has gained unprecedented prominence. Novel materials with potentially exciting new applications in catalysis are being discovered at a much higher rate than ever before. Innovative tools to fabricate, manipulate, characterize, and evaluate such materials are being developed and expanded. To keep pace with this extremely rapid growth, it is necessary to take a breath from time to time, to critically assess the current knowledge and provide thoughts for future developments. This book represents one of these moments, as a number of prominent scientists in nanostructured catalysts join forces to provide insightful reviews of their areas of expertise; thus, offering an overall picture of the state-of-the art of the field. Nanostructured materials designate an increasing number of materials with designed shapes, surfaces, structures, pore systems, etc. In general, nanostructured catalysts have modified surfaces, including materials whose surfaces have been altered via such techniques as grafting and tethering of organic or organometallic species, or through various deposition procedures including electro, electroless, and vapor deposition, or simple adsorption. Materials with designed regular pore systems, such as zeolites, metallophosphates, periodic mesoporous materials, nanoporous organic, and organometallic materials are also members of the large family of nanostructured materials. These materials are of paramount importance, particularly in catalysis. One of the most distinctive characteristics of this book is the fact that it is all-inclusive, since most of the materials listed above have been dealt with in a concise and informative manner. With fourteen up-to-date reports on the design, synthesis, and catalytic properties of nanostructured materials, this book sets the stage for things to come in this area. The development of novel catalysts, taking advantage of the many interesting attributes of periodic nanoporous materials, and the discovery of innovative materials, such as polymer- silica nanocomposites and confined nanoparticles, are some of the leading ideas for future work in the increasingly important field of nanostructured catalysts.
