Description: Utilizing a didactical approach, the authors describe the kinetic theory of catalytic reactions and kinetics is related to the molecular properties of the reacting species. The volume opens with a historical overview of how the fields of catalysis and kinetics developed. Subsequent chapters explore the descriptive kinetics of catalytic reactions as well as the statistical thermodynamic concepts of reaction rate theory. The authors apply these concepts and arrive at a microscopic description of catalytic reactions at the molecular level.

Description: This book summarizes the major developments in the theory of reaction energetics on metal surfaces and its applications to technically important phenomena. Reaction Energies on Metal Surfaces focuses on the ways of calculating the heats of adsorption and reaction activation barriers and how these energetics determine the diffusion of adsorbed species and their chemical reactivity revealing in dissociation, recombination and disproportionation. Active researchers in the field provide a thorough coverage of the subject providing both theorists and experimentalists with a mutual understanding of the many diverse phenomena and techniques which are so critical for the steady progress of this field.

Description: Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is becoming increasingly fashionable as an oxidant, both in industry and in academia and whose production is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. This growth in interest is largely due to environmental considerations related to the clean nature of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant, its by-product being only water. To date this chemical has largely been employed as a non-selective oxidant in operations like the bleaching of paper, cellulose and textiles, or in the formulation of detergents, and only to a minimal extent in the manufacture of organic chemicals. This book has been organized to cover the different aspects of the chemistry of hydrogen peroxide. The various chapters into which the book is divided have been written critically by the authors with the general aim of stimulating new ideas and emphasizing those aspects that are likely to lead to new developments in organic synthesis in the coming future.

Description: What use is physical chemistry to the student of biochemistry and biology? This central question is answered in this book mainly through the use of worked examples and problems. The book starts by introducing the laws of thermodynamics, and then uses these laws to derive the equations relevant to the student in dealing with chemical equilibria (including the binding of small molecules to proteins), properties of solutions, acids and bases, and oxidation-reduction processes. The student is thus shown how a knowledge of thermodynamic qualities makes it possible to predict whether, and how, a reaction will proceed. Thermodynamics, however, gives no information about how fast a reaction will happen. The study of the rates at which processes occur (kinetics) forms the second main theme of the book. This section poses and answers questions such as `how is the rate of a reaction affected by temperature, pH, ionic strength, and the nature of the reactants? These same ideas are then shown to be useful in the study of enzyme-catalysed reactions.

Description: Describes the present state of modern surface science, and is also a reference source for data and concepts related to properties of surfaces and interfaces. Focuses on the qualities of solid-gas and solid-vacuum interfaces. Discusses local attributes of surface atoms and molecules, atomic structures, chemical bonding, absorptions, catalysis and mechanical properties. Presents molecular understanding of surface phenomena and relates it to macroscopic surface properties.
