Description: Catalysis is one of the most important technologies in the industrial world, controlling more than 90% of industrial chemical processes and essential for large-scale production of plastics and fuel. Exploring the most common type of catalysis used in industry, Electron Microscopy in Heterogeneous Catalysis provides a coherent account of heterogeneous catalytic processes and catalyst surface structure at the atomic scale as elucidated by electron microscopy techniques. The book addresses a number of issues that are fundamental to the understanding of heterogeneous catalysis by oxides and supported metals. The properties of a catalyst are governed by its microstructure and chemistry on an atomic scale, and electron microscopy methods are essential to directly analyze these properties. The book provides important information about active species, metastable-transient species, mechanisms of particle catalysis sintering, promoter-poisoning effects on an atomic scale, and catalyst support interactions on a microscale.

Description: The theoretical basis of chemisorption and catalysis by metals and alloys, and their use in a range of model and industrially significant catalysed processes are described in this book.

Model, as well as industrially used reactions catalyzed by alloys are reviewed, among them the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, reactions of alkanes ('reforming'-reactions), oxidations, hydro-/dehydrogenation, decomposition of methanoic acid, deuterium exchange reactions (H2, hydrocarbons) and to a lesser extent some others. This review on catalytic reactions, with results from the available information, is introduced in two chapters which summarize the definition, the physical meaning and the role of such factors as ligand (electronic structure), ensemble size (geometrical) and ensemble composition effects. The assessment of the roles of these individual factors requires the knowledge of several physical techniques and a proper evaluation of the results

Description: Catalysis is the crucial step in the production of most chemicals. Furthermore, it is indispensable in research and environmental protection. Despite the fact that more than 80 0f production processes in industry are catalyzed, most chemists and engineers are restricted to trial and error when searching for a catalyst. They usually suffer from a lack of a scientific basis that would allow a systematic development of catalysts.

The present book covers both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, with emphasis on industrial processes. Environmental aspects and economic data are also taken into account. Each chapter provides plenty of examples. Many exercises help to test and consolidate knowledge of the topics. Thus this book is the first on industrial catalysis that is suitable for private study. Practitioners will also find further valuable information, such as simulation of reactors for catalysis. You will not find a comparable book on industrial catalysis!!!
