Description: "Alkenes and Aromatics" examines the reaction mechanisms associated with carbon-carbon double bonds, and then goes on to look at aromatic substitution (nitration, halogenation, sulfonation and Friedel Crafts reactions). The formation and reactions of diazonium ions are also discussed. This knowledge is then applied to the synthesis of pseudoephedrine, highlighting the key aspects of synthesis, such as yields, stereochemistry and reaction conditions. A Case Study on the organic chemical industry completes the book, providing a background as to why understanding organic reactions is so important. The Molecular World series provides an integrated introduction to all branches of chemistry for both students wishing to specialise and those wishing to gain a broad understanding of chemistry and its relevance to the everyday world and to other areas of science. The books, with their Case Studies and accompanying multi-media interactive CD-ROMs, will also provide valuable resource material for teachers and lecturers.

Description: Sulfur chemistry is becoming increasingly important as the role of this element is explored in both biological and environmental fields. After the initial chapters have discussed the synthesis, reactivity, and properties of the compounds in general, each of the next nine chapters takes a specific sulfur containing functional group and expands the discussion on synthetic procedures. The final chapter looks at the major uses of organo-sulfur compounds and their impact on biological and environmental areas.

Description: This new primer offers a thorough understanding of the carbonyl group, knowledge essential for an understanding of organic chemistry. The Carbonyl group appears in many classes of compounds, Core Carbonyl Chemistry covers the chemistry of these classes in a brisk style, and also embraces the reactivity of this group. Recent developments are dealt with where appropriate. The study of this material is a vital part of all university year and/or second year courses in chemistry or biochemistry, and this Primer will be useful to all students taking such courses.

Description: In recent years, considerable advances in organonitrogen chemistry--including the development of many important new reagents and synthetic methods--have underscored the need for a comprehensive, definitive account of the organic chemistry of aliphatic nitrogen compounds. This new book fills that need and will serve as an invaluable reference for all workers in the field. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction followed by a detailed account of the preparation of the type of compound under consideration, and concludes with an examination of that compound's reactivity, including mechanistic aspects. All of the main compound classes (with the exception of amino acids) are included. Students and professionals in organic chemistry will want to own this unique guide to aliphatic nitrogen compounds.

Description: Beginning as chemical curiosities, carbenes are now solidly established as reactive intermediates with fascinating and productive research areas of their own. Five decades of divalent carbon chemistry have provided us with a vast repertoire of new, unusual and surprising reactions. Some of those reactions, once classified as exotic, have become standard methods in organic synthesis. These highly reactive carbene species have been harnessed and put to work to achieve difficult synthetic tasks that other reactive intermediates cannot easily perform. The fruitful relationship between experiment and theory has pushed carbene chemistry further toward the direction of reaction control; that is, regio- and stereoselectivity in intra- and intermolecular addition and insertion reactions. The interplay between experiment and modern spectroscopy has led to the characterisation of many carbenes that are crucial to both an understanding and a further development of this field. Understanding of carbene chemistry has advanced dramatically, especially in the last decade, and new developments continue to emerge. Some of the recent exciting findings have been collected in the first volume of Advances in Carbene Chemistry. With this second volume, the series will continue to provide a periodic coverage of carbene chemistry in its broadest sense - leading into the next century.

Description: Covers the intermolecular Diels-Alder reaction, focusing on one of the reactants--the diene. The first chapter deals with the fundamental principles of the reaction; the other five chapters describe the salient features of the different classes of dienes and present a wealth of tabulated data. In the tables the dienes and the dienophiles are arranged so that the reader can easily find the dienophile and the cycloaddition reactions of interest to him. Included are references to a very large part of the literature from 1978 to 1987.

Description: The amide linkage is one of the most fundamental and widespread chemical bonds in nature, underlying the properties of a vast array of organic molecules, polymers, and materials, including peptides and proteins. Arthur Greenberg, Curt Breneman, and Joel Liebman’s peerless text provides comprehensive coverage of the experimental, structural, and computational findings that shed light on the chemical and physical properties of the amide linkage, as well as its emerging applications in materials and biotechnology. Chapters in The Amide Linkage highlight how this chemical bond factors in the design of enzyme inhibitors, cyclic peptides, antibacterial agents, and emerging nanotechnology applications. This one-of-a-kind study also: -
Discusses selected aspects of chemical reactions, structure, bonding, and energetics of the amide bond, including amide rotational barriers, stereochemistry, complexation, spectroscopy, and thermochemistry - Presents specific applications to supramolecular and stereospecific synthesis
- Discusses ke y aspects of peptide and protein chemistry–such as molecular recognition, conformation, and folding–in terms of the amide linkage
- Includes chapters contributed by numerous eminent chemists and biochemists
Organic, medicinal, polymer, and physical chemists, as well as biochemists and materials scientists, will find The Amide Linkage to be an invaluable addition to their professional libraries.
