Description: Solid state electronics is undergoing rapid changes driven by heteroepitaxy, lithography, and new device concepts. In particular there has been a flurry of activity in compound semiconductors as a result of the advent of semiconductor laser and integrated optoelectronic circuits. Physical Models of Semiconductor Quantum Devices addresses three main areas of solid state electronics: electronic and optical properties of low dimensional semiconductor materials; the principal physics of quantum electronic devices; and the principal physics of quantum optical devices. The link between the basic physics on which the real devices are based and the output from these devices is closely observed. The result is a detailed overview of the new material properties on which novel solid state electronic devices such as quantum diodes, small size transistors, and high electron mobility transistors are based. It provides an insight into the state of the art in material and device research that will be of interest to all those involved in compound semiconductors.

Description: This book is an introduction to the techniques of many-body quantum theory with a large number of applications to condensed matter physics. The basic idea of the book is to provide a self-contained formulation of the theoretical framework without losing mathematical rigor, while at the same time providing physical motivation and examples. The examples are taken from applications in electron systems and transport theory. On the formal side, the book covers an introduction to second quantization, many-body Green's function, finite temperature Feynman diagrams and bosonization. The applications include traditional transport theory in bulk as well as mesoscopic systems, where both the Landau-Buttiker formalism and recent developments in correlated transport phenomena in mesoscopic systems and nano-structures are covered. Other topics include interacting electron gases, plasmons, electron-phonon interactions, superconductivity and a final chapter on one-dimensional systems where a detailed treatment of Luttinger liquid theory and bosonization techniques is given. Having grown out of a set of lecture notes, and containing many pedagogical exercises, this book is designed as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course, and is also well suited for self-study.

Description: Analytical measurements at the single molecule level under ambient conditions have become almost routine in the past few years. The application of this technology to fundamental studies of heterogeneity in biomolecular structure and dynamics, chemical and biological reaction kinetics and photophysics provides a rich playground for molecular scientists. The potential use of single molecule detection for nanotechnology and quantum information processing is a new and almost unexplored area. This handbook is intended for those interested in a practical introduction to single molecule investigations using fluorescence techniques and places special emphasis on the practicalities of achieving single molecule resolution, analyzing the resulting data and exploration of the applications in biophysics. It is ideal for graduate research students and others embarking on work in this exciting field.

Description: A one-stop resource on all aspects of semiconductor wafer bonding for materials scientists and electrical engineers Semiconductor Wafer Bonding addresses the entire spectrum of mainstream and likely future applications of wafer bonding. It examines all of the important issues surrounding this technology, including basic interactions between flat surfaces, the influence of particles, surface steps and cavities, surface preparation and room-temperature wafer bonding, thermal treatment of bonded wafer pairs, and much more. This unique, one-stop resource consolidates information previously available only by time-consuming searches through technical journals, proceedings, and book chapters for more than 1,000 published articles on wafer bonding. It covers all materials used for wafer bonding-including silicon, III-V compounds, fused and crystalline quartz, glass, silicon carbide, sapphire, ferroelectrics, and many others. For materials scientists and electrical engineers who need to exploit the potential of this flourishing technology, Semiconductor Wafer Bonding is a convenient one-stop resource for answers to many common questions. It is also an excellent text/reference for graduate students eager to learn about this interdisciplinary field, which spans surface chemistry, solid-state physics, materials science, and electrical engineering.

Description: Liquid crystals are fluids with directionality defined. Polymers are long molecules with a shape that can be changed. As a network, polymers form rubber-a soft solid that is locally liquid-like and capable of huge extension. Liquid crystal elastomers area combination of all these curious aspects, but with additional, revolutionary new phenomena-for example, spontaneous shape changes of several hundred percent induced by temperature change, with equally large opto-mechanical responses, shape change without energy cost (Soft elasticity), color change with strain, lasing and photonics, sensitivity to molecular handedness and soft solid ferroelectricity. This book is a primer for liquid crystals, polymers, rubber and elasticity. It then describes the theory and experiment of these remarkable materials for the first time as a monograph. Worked examples are solved so that the reader can become proficient in the field himself. The book is directed at physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians at the graduate level and beyond.

Description: Friction, lubrication, adhesion, and wear are prevalent physical phenomena in everyday life and in many key technologies. This book explains how these tribological phenomena originate from atomistic and microscale physical phenomena and shows how this understanding can be used to solve macroscale tribology problems. The book is intended to serve both as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in tribology and as an introduction to the field for those scientists and engineers working with technologies where a good grasp of tribology is essential.

Description: Microfluidics deals with fluids flowing in miniaturized systems. It is a young discipline, which is expected to substantially expand over the next few years, stimulated by the considerable development of applications in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and chemical engineering domains. The book is an introduction to this discipline. In the first chapter, it presents a short historical background and discusses the main perspectives of the domain, at economical and scientific levels. Then the physics of miniaturization and the fluid mechanics of microflows are discussed. In the following three chapters, dispersion, electrical and thermal phenomena in miniaturized devices are presented. A brief introduction to microfabrication techniques is given in chapter six and the book concludes by providing a few examples of microfludic systems. The book is written in a simple, direct, pedagogical way. It emphasizes concepts and understanding, rather than technical detail. It offers a cross-disciplinary view of the field embracing biological, chemical, physical and engineering perspectives. By using the book, the reader will have concepts, methods and data to grasp situation, which typically arise in mircofludic systems.
