Binding: Paperback
Author: Anthony Leggett
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Dewey Decimal Number: 530
Publication Date: 2006-11-30
Reading Level: 208

Description: Is the universe infinite, or does it have an edge beyond which there is, quite literally, nothing? Do we live in the only possible universe? Why does it have one time and three space dimensions - or does it? What is it made of? What does it mean when we hear that a new particle has been discovered? Will quantum mechanics eventually break down and give way to a totally new description of the world, one whose features we cannot even begin to imagine?
This book aims to give the non-specialist reader a general overview of what physicists think they do and do not know in some representative frontier areas of contemporary physics. After sketching out the historical background, A. J. Leggett goes on to discuss the current situation and some of the open problems of cosmology, high-energy physics, and condensed-matter physics. Unlike most other accounts, this book focuses not so much on recent achievements as on the fundamental problems at the heart of the subject, and emphasizes the provisional nature of our present understanding of things.

Dewey Decimal Number: 621.3815
Publication Date: 1999-03-11
Reading Level: 400

Description: Superconductivity made accessible-a unique introduction.

Does superconductivity have to be hard to understand? No, says Alan Kadin, as he proceeds to make the field accessible to engineers, applied physicists, even undergraduate students in electrical engineering. Setting advanced theories aside, Dr. Kadin uses simple circuit models to develop an understanding of the physics of superconductors, then applies this knowledge to superconducting circuits and systems. He covers cutting-edge circuit applications and materials along with practical examples-giving readers insight into the pros and cons of various superconductors and what superconductivity has to offer for different disciplines. End-of-chapter problems as well as numerous conceptual line drawings, circuit schematics, and plots complement the following topics:
* The central role of inductance and kinetic inductance.
* Transmission line model for RF and dc properties.
* Dual circuit transformations to follow vortex and fluxon motion.
* A balanced coverage of low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors.
* Both large-scale (power) and small-scale (electronic) applications.
* Applications of superconducting devices to electromagnetic radiation detectors.
* The use of SPICE to simulate Josephson junctions and circuits.

Description: Quantum Networks is focused on density matrix theory cast into a product operator representation, particularly adapted to describing networks of finite state subsystems. This approach is important for understanding non-classical aspects such as single subsystem and multi-subsystem entanglement. An intuitive picture evolves of how these features are generated and destroyed by interactions with the environment. This second edition has been revised and enlarged. For better clarity the text has been partly reorganized and figures and formulae are presented in a more attractive way.

Description: The strengthening of metals by a variety of means has been of interest over much of history. However, the elucidation of the actual mechanisms involved in the processes of alloying and work hardening, and the related processes of metals as a scientific pursuit, has become possible only through the parallel developments in dislocation theory and in definitive experimental tools of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The important developments over the past several decades in the mechanistic understanding of the often complex processes of interaction of dislocations with each other, with solute atoms and with precipitates during plastic flow have largely remained scattered in the professional literature. This has made it difficult for students and professionals to have ready access to this subject as a whole. While there are some excellent reviews of certain aspects of the subject, there is presently no single comprehensive coverage available of the central mechanisms and their modelling.
The present book on Strengthening Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity provides such a coverage in a generally transparent and readily understandable form. It is intended as an advanced text for graduate students in materials science and mechanical engineering. The central processes of strengthening that are presented are modeled by dislocation mechanics in detail and the results are compared extensively with the best available experimental information. The form of the coverage is intended to inspire students or professional practitioners in the field to develop their own models of similar or related phenomena and, finally, engage in more advanced computational simulations, guided by the book.

Description: This is volume 1 of two-volume book that presents an excellent, comprehensive exposition of the multi-faceted subjects of modern condensed matter physics, unified within an original and coherent conceptual framework. Traditional subjects such as band theory and lattice dynamics are tightly organized in this framework, while many new developments emerge spontaneously from it. In this volume, · Basic concepts are emphasized; usually they are intuitively introduced, then more precisely formulated, and compared with correlated concepts. · A plethora of new topics, such as quasicrystals, photonic crystals, GMR, TMR, CMR, high Tc superconductors, Bose–Einstein condensation, etc., are presented with sharp physical insights. · Bond and band approaches are discussed in parallel, breaking the barrier between physics and chemistry. · A highly accessible chapter is included on correlated electronic states — rarely found in an introductory text. · Introductory chapters on tunneling, mesoscopic phenomena, and quantum-confined nanostructures constitute a sound foundation for nanoscience and nanotechnology. · The text is profusely illustrated with about 500 figures.

Description: In 1984, physicists discovered a totally unexpected form of matter--a structure that appeared to contain five-fold symmetry axes, which cannot exist in strictly periodic structures--that became known as quasicrystals. In an effort to understand these structures, a theory that employed higher dimensional space groups was conceived, enabling the creation of new alloy phases that exhibited the properties expected from this model. Now in its second edition, Quasicrystals: A Primer offers an up-to-date and accessible introduction to the subject for students approaching it for the first time. Providing lively treatments of a range of practical, experimental, and theoretical topics, the book has been completely updated to reflect the latest advances in quasicrystal research and application. Helpful problem sets and a computer program that generates a Penrose lattice are included as well. Students and researchers in materials science, crystallography, and condensed matter physics will welcome this new edition of a trustworthy, user-friendly survey of an important topic in crystallography.
