Current trends are exposed and explained for a large class of alloys and compounds. The modern field of artificially layered systems - known as multilayers - and their industrial applications are dealt with in detail. The book also relates the rich thermodynamic properties of magnets to the ab initio results originating from the electronic structure.

Description: The scanning tunneling microscopes and the atomic force microscopy, both capable of imaging and manipulating individual atoms, were crowned with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986, and are the cornerstones of nanotechnology today. The first edition of this book has nurtured numerous beginners and experts since 1993.

The second edition includes a number of new developments in the field. Non-contact atomic-force microscopy has demonstrated true atomic resolution. It enables direct observation and mapping of individual chemical bonds. A new chapter about the underlying physics, atomic forces, is added. The chapter on atomic force microscopy is substantially expanded. Spin-polarized STM has enabled the observation of local magnetic phenomena down to atomic scale. A pedagogical presentation of the basic concepts is included. Inelastic scanning tunneling microscopy has shown the capability of studying vibrational modes of individual molecules. The underlying theory and new instrumentation are added. For biological research, to increase the speed of scanning to observe life phenomena in real time is a key. Advanced in this direction is presented as well. The capability of STM to manipulate individual atoms is one of the cornerstones of nanotechnology. The theoretical basis and in particular the relation between tunneling and interaction energy are thoroughly presented, together with experimental facts.

Description: Applications of elastic wave phenomena are becoming ever more important in telecommunications (signal processing), medicine (echography), metallurgy (non-destructive testing) and in other fields, too. For example, millions of wave filters are currently produced each month for mobile phones. The objective of this first of two volumes is to study the different mechanisms of propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media. The main topics treated in this volume are an introduction of the main features for the simple case of fluids, tensorial expressions for the elasticity and piezoelectricity of crystals, solutions of the general equation of propagation in the form of slowness surfaces, and a study of the various types of guided waves (Rayleigh wave, Love wave, Lamb wave). The companion book, Vol. II, describes the generation and applications of the free and guided waves introduced in the present volume.

Description: This book presents the wide range of topics in two-dimensional physics of quantum Hall systems, especially fractional quantum Hall states. It covers the fundamental problems of two-dimensional quantum statistics in terms of topology and the corresponding braid group formalism for composite fernions, and the main formalism used in many-body quantum Hall theories, the Chern-Simons theory. Numerical studies are introduced for spherical systems and the composite fermion theory is tested. The book introduces the concept of the hierarchy of condensed states, the BCS paired Hall state, and multi-component quantum Hall systems and spin quantum Hall systems.

Edition: 4th, rev. and extended ed.
Dewey Decimal Number: 530.417
Publication Date: 2001-10-16
Reading Level: 572

Description: This book emphasizes both experimental and theoretical aspects of surface, interface and thin film physics. Compared to the earlier editions, which bore the title "Surfaces and Interfaces of Solid Materials", the book now places more emphasis on thin films, including also their superconducting and ferromagnetic properties. The present 4th edition thus presents techniques of preparing well-defined solid surfaces and interfaces, fundamental aspects of adsorption and layer growth, as well as basic models for the description of structural, vibronic and electronic properties of surfaces, interfaces and thin films. Because of their importance for modern information technology, significant attention is paid to the electronic properties of semiconductor inter- faces and heterostructures. Collective phenomena, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, also feature prominently. Experimental sections covering essential measurement and preparation techniques are presented in separate panels.

Description: This book explains the observed trends in the bonding and structure of molecules and solids within the models of the electronic structure. Emphasis is placed throughout on recent theoretical developments that link structural stability to the local topology or connectivity of the lattice through the moments of the electronic density of states. The chemically-intuitive Tight Binding approximation provides a unified treatment of the covalent bond in small molecules and extended solids, while the physically-intuitive Nearly-Free Electron approximation provides a natural description of the metallic bonds in sp-valent metals. Unlike the conventional reciprocal-space formulation of band theory, this modern real-space approach allows an immediate understanding of the origin of structural trends within the periodic table for the elements and the AB structure map for binary compounds. Although this unique book is aimed primarily at postgraduates in physics, chemistry, and materials science, a chapter on basic quantum mechanical concepts is included for those readers with little or no basic knowledge of the subject.

Description: Effective medium theory arises in condensed matter physics when a field in a material medium is to be considered. The subject has been developed considerably and while the results are useful for predicting materials performance, the theory can also be used in a wide range of problems in physics and engineering. This book develops the topic of effective medium theory by bringing together the essentials of both the static and the dynamical theory. Electromagnetic systems are thoroughly dealt with, as well as related areas such as the CPA theory of alloys, liquids, the density functional theory and others, and the unifying aspects of the effective medium concept are emphasized. The final chapter contains a wide range of useful applications in condensed matter physics and material science.
