This book offers a comprehensive account of the wide range of crystallography in many branches of science. The fundamentals, the most frequently used procedures and experimental techniques are all described in a detailed way. A number of appendices are devoted to more specialist aspects. The book is an updated and fully revised new edition with emphasis on the wide range of topical applications and current areas of research. Ample illustrations help clarify the subject matter. To provide a better understanding of the basics of crystallography, a compact disk has been added to this new edition, offering the facilities of modern graphics to simulate experiments, show complex images, and provide a number of exercises.

Description: This book provides a comprehensive and unified account of the structure and properties of crystalline binary adducts. Perhaps better known as molecular complexes and compounds, these crystals are currently estimated (from molecular recognition studies) to make up one quarter of the world's crystals, providing evidence for some sort of special attraction between the two components. DNA is perhaps the most famous example but others (hydrates, solvates, host-guest inclusion complexes, donor-acceptor compounds) pervade the whole body of solid state chemistry. Although much research has been published, there has never been a comprehensive and unified treatment of the whole field. This book has been designed to fill this gap, comparing and contrasting the various examples and the different types of interaction (hydrogen bonding, inclusion and localized or delocalized charge transfer). More than 600 figures, 200 tables and 3500 references are included in the book. Since most 'parent compounds' form a number of adducts, the fraction of crystalline binary adducts is only going to grow making this account just the 'tip of the iceberg.'

Description: Transport in Nanostructures reviews the results of experimental research into mesoscopic devices, and develops a detailed theoretical framework for understanding their behavior. The authors discuss the key observable phenomena in nanostructures, including phase interference and weak localization. They then describe quantum confined systems, transmission in nanostructures, quantum dots and single electron phenomena. Separate chapters cover interference in diffusive transport and temperature decay of fluctuations, and a chapter on nonequilibrium transport and nanodevices concludes the book. Throughout, Ferry and Goodnick interweave experimental results with the appropriate theoretical formalism. Profusely illustrated, the book will be of great interest to graduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics, as well as to researchers working on semiconductor nanostructures or the development of new ultrasmall devices.

Description: The Feynman path integrals are becoming increasingly important in the applications of quantum mechanics and field theory. The path integral formulation of quantum anomalies, (i.e.: the quantum breaking of certain symmetries), can now cover all the known quantum anomalies in a coherent manner. In this book the authors provide an introduction to the path integral method in quantum field theory and its applications to the analysis of quantum anomalies. No previous knowledge of field theory beyond the advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed. The book provides the first coherent introductory treatment of the path integral formulation of chiral and Weyl anomalies, with applications to gauge theory in two and four dimensions, conformal field theory and string theory. Explicit and elementary path integral calculations of most of the quantum anomalies covered are given. The conceptual basis of the path integral bosonization in two-dimensional theory, which may have applications to condensed matter theory, for example is clarified. The book also covers the recent interesting developments in the treatment of fermions and chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.
