Description: Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The "Willardson and Beer" Series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in publishing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise indeed that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded. Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.

Description: The features and mechanism of Colossal Magnetoresistance, or CMR, in manganese oxides as well as device physics are highlighted in this book, with a focus on tunneling MR for some artificial structures. Underlying new science, such as tunable electron-lattice interaction in a metal and roles of orbital degrees of freedom in producing an unconventional metallic feature, is also discussed. The book provides a systematic exploration of the CMR materials and an extensive investigation of the electronic phenomena of those compounds by various experimental means.

Description: Here is both a textbook for beginners and a handbook for specialists in plasma physics and gaseous electronics. The book contains much useful data: results of experiments and calculations, and reference data. It provides estimates of typical parameters and formulas in forms suitable for computations. Gas discharges of all important types are discussed: breakdown, glow, arc, spark and corona at radio frequency, microwave and optical frequences. The generation of plasma, and its application to high power gas lasers are treated in detail.

Description: The present book covers different aspects of proton conduction: the first part describes chemical and physical parameters necessary for fast proton conduction and proposes a classification of different kinds of proton conductors. Comparison is made with other hydrogen containing materials (metals, graphites). The importance of partial water pressure, the role of defects and surface phenomena are discussed. The second part treats the chemistry, structures and electrical properties of typical materials from hydrogen bronzes to polymers via ice, hydroxides, acid sulphates, layer hydrates, clays, gels and porous or fractal media. The third part discusses the methods concerning the proton dynamics from local to macroscopic scale. The fourth part deals with conductivity mechanisms and the last one presents typical applications: electrochemical systems for production or energy storage and microionic devices.
