Description: "If a martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law.
Many Americans are outraged by liberal hostility to traditional religion. But as Ann Coulter reveals in this, her most explosive book yet, to focus solely on the Left's attacks on our Judeo-Christian tradition is to miss a larger point: liberalism is a religion—a godless one.
And it is now entrenched as the state religion of this county.
Though liberalism rejects the idea of God and reviles people of faith, it bears all the attributes of a religion. In Godless, Coulter throws open the doors of the Church of Liberalism, showing us its sacraments (abortion), its holy writ (Roe v. Wade), its martyrs (from Soviet spy Alger Hiss to cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal), its clergy (public school teachers), its churches (government schools, where prayer is prohibited but condoms are free), its doctrine of infallibility (as manifest in the "absolute moral authority" of spokesmen from Cindy Sheehan to Max Cleland), and its cosmology (in which mankind is an inconsequential accident).
Then, of course, there's the liberal creation myth: Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
For liberals, evolution is the touchstone that separates the enlightened from the benighted. But Coulter neatly reverses the pretense that liberals are rationalists guided by the ideals of free inquiry and the scientific method. She exposes the essential truth about Darwinian evolution that liberals refuse to confront: it is bogus science.
Writing with a keen appreciation for genuine science, Coulter reveals that the so-called gaps in the theory of evolution are all there is—Darwinism is nothing but a gap. After 150 years of dedicated searching into the fossil record, evolution's proponents have failed utterly to substantiate its claims. And a long line of supposed evidence, from the infamous Piltdown Man to the "evolving" peppered moths of England, has been exposed as hoaxes. Still, liberals treat those who question evolution as religious heretics and prohibit students from hearing about real science when it contradicts Darwinism. And these are the people who say they want to keep faith out of the classroom?
Liberals' absolute devotion to Darwinism, Coulter shows, has nothing to do with evolution's scientific validity and everything to do with its refusal to admit the possibility of God as a guiding force. They will brook no challenges to the official religion.
Fearlessly confronting the high priests of the Church of Liberalism and ringing with Coulter's razor-sharp wit, Godless is the most important and riveting book yet from one of today's most lively and impassioned conservative voices.
"Liberals love to boast that they are not 'religious,' which is what one would expect to hear from the state-sanctioned religion. Of course liberalism is a religion. It has its own cosmology, its own miracles, its own beliefs in the supernatural, its own churches, its own high priests, its own saints, its own total worldview, and its own explanation of the existence of the universe. In other words, liberalism contains all the attributes of what is generally known as 'religion.'" —From Godless

Review Summary: This One I Keep... |

Details: A couple of years ago, I loaned my copies of Ann Coulter's Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism and Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right to a conservative friend who then loaned it (with my permission) to a liberal relative. The books were never returned and probably never will be. Typical liberal taking what is not theirs and providing nothing in return.
I say that to say this, I am not loaning my copy of Godless: The Church of Liberalism to anyone. Besides providing a great history lesson in how we got to this place, my favorite part of the book was the section dealing with evolution. Now some may disagree with her, but I have never read a more clearly defined argument for this subject. This was a sharp mind and a great wordsmith at her best. I could feel the passion on the written page and knew that I was in the hands of a true believer.
Having read several modern books dealing with - to varying degrees - evolution such as Of Pandas and People: The Central Question of Biological Origins, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything and The God Delusion, I can honestly attest that Ann Coulter's arguments win the day. I highly recommend this book for both the political writing and the section on evolution. I hope you find this review helpful.

Details: Ann Coulter's book is a work of fiction. She shows her total ignorance of science. On any topic such as evolution you can always find a dissenting scientist. But the vast majority of scientists accept that evolution is a fact. The theory is in how evolution works. The Cambrian explosion was not an explosion. It took 20 million years to occur and the Burgess shale fossils show that the prototypes already existed much before the so called explosion. The HOX genes that direct the bodies arrangements already existed. The reason for the so called explosion was that the level of oxygen increased dramatically in our atmoshere allowing for the surge of new species. Ann makes another 15-20 errors in trying to debunk science. Ann would rather have the Dark Ages again when religion ruled and science was forbidden by the church. She is typical of the religious extremists that want to replace science in our classrooms and in its place put religion as the explanation for everything. Ann is ignorant and arrogant. But she sells her books because she panders to the public which is unfortunately also science illiterate. She sees the world in black and white colors and nothing in between is acceptable. Please do not waste your time or money on this worthless and distorted book. |

Review Summary: Coulter Speaks Her Mind - What a Mind! |
Date: 2008-09-21 |

Details: Her book deals with the many absurdities and shortcomings of liberalism. But in a lot of ways her job is really easy. She just spends a considerable amount of time quoting the liberals themselves. All of their ridiculous pronouncements are footnoted. All the weird claims and puzzling ideas of the leftists are documented.
Coulter is really very clever, and this book abounds with funny one-liners. And with her legal background, her wit works well with her powerfully trained mind. Indeed, she could easily pen a much more serious, academic and scholarly book, but she is a lot more fun to read in this style. Because of her legal expertise, her sections on law and the legal profession are quite good. She offers an insightful critique of liberal visions of justice, sentencing and policing.
A huge shortcoming of liberalism is their inclination to be weak on crime. Liberals love to exonerate the criminal while finding fault with the system and ignoring the crime's victim. Most have an invalid understanding of human nature. They do not view people as made in the image of God and being ethically accountable; rather liberals see people as glorified animals without any moral responsibility. "A chief ingredient of the liberal religion is the bestialization of humanity."
Liberal think that people are born good, but corrupted by their society. So, liberals believe murderers are "basically good people except for their tendency to sometimes kill people". Coulter documents how these liberals often raise convicted criminals into celebrities. She documents many cases of liberal madness, from light sentencing, restraining the ability of the police in their jobs, to rewriting the Constitution.
A typical liberal's approach to law and order has been disastrous, and a return to true law enforcement, mandatory sentences and real concern for the victim is part of the process to bring back sanity. Coulter clearly demonstrates the rise in crime under liberal policies, and the fall in crime under sane conservative rule.
For many liberals, abortion on demand is the test of true liberalism. Liberals hate the 2,200 American lives lost in the Iraq war, but they speak of the 1.3 million children murdered each year in America as the right to choose. It seems to Coulter that the liberal's most important value may be destroying human life.
The priorities of the left are clearly set out by Coulter: "Liberals are more upset when someone chops down a tree than when a child is aborted. Even if one rates an unborn child less than a full-blown person, doesn't the unborn child rate slightly higher than vegetation?"
Then we see the `I hate America' liberals; those are the ones who have a pathological hatred of America, and find America responsible for all the world's ills.
She also has a few chapters on "junk science" and the left's misuse of science. "Liberals lie about the science on stem-cell research because they warm to the idea of destroying human embryos. If they can desensitize Americans to the idea of harvesting human embryos for imaginary medical cures, liberals believe it will help advance the cause of killing the unborn."
She tackles the issues of education and the teachers' unions. These are breeding grounds for leftwing propaganda; they are also hothouses for humanism and secularism. "Public schools are forbidden from mentioning religion not because of the Constitution, but because public schools are the Left's madrassas...."
Many other leftwing beliefs are strongly attacked. Her abrasive approach is not for everyone. Of course, she could say "Most liberals..." or "Liberals usually..." or "In general, liberals..." instead of just saying "liberals...". But it is a great rhetorical feature. It makes her case stronger and delivers more punch. So it is really a question of style. The content is right on, and there are plenty of quotes straight from the liberals' mouths to help make the case. The altar of liberalism has many cracks, and Coulter is happy to expose them.
If you are sick of the up to recent left/liberal hegemony in the mainstream press, and want a humorous and hard-hitting expose of the liberal/leftist agenda, this is great! |

Review Summary: A review that even M. Huff might like |

Details: First off, let's dispense with the idea that Ann Coulter is a Christian. How many references to "fisting" and other explicit sexual acts are acceptable in a book by a Christian author? How about NONE, if we as believers are to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the world? By her offensive language, and lack of love for liberals (aren't we supposed to pray for them?), Coulter betrays the fact that she is merely using Christianity as a political shield from behind which she can safely lob vulgarities at the enemy in the name of God. Yes, the liberals are wrong, and yes, they should be held accountable for their actions. But no true Christian could ever publish such hateful diatribe. Coulter does nothing to advance the Gospel ... indeed she causes great damage. How sad that many liberals and other non-believers will judge our Savior by the words of someone we would never claim as our own.
That being said, Godless is an entertaining read, as long as you don't mind occasionally coarse language. But Christians looking for an apologetic for the conservative viewpoint might best look to authors whose claim to Christianity is not demolished before the end of their first chapter.
On the other hand, from a secular perspective, this book is at once funny, truthful, confrontational, thought-provoking and sure to anger anyone who has an innate liberal worldview that prevents them from seeing that they are every bit as hypocritical - perhaps even more so - as the conservatives (yes, we are, and we need to admit it even if they won't).
As for Coulter's accuracy: Having studied the issue of evolution vs. real science for over ten years, I can confirm that what she has written about this specific topic is indeed correct - though at times it can be difficult for those who are unfamiliar with the controversy to tell where the facts end and the satire begins. Her credibility having thus been clearly demonstrated in this one area, I can only trust that she is equally accurate with regard to other topics she covers. Judging by the angry response of liberals, Coulter has hit the nail on the head.
To those who will inevitably post comments that I am a moron, I say, "You are the very type of person Coulter SHOULD have been praying for if she was what she claims to be," and I encourage you to explore BOTH sides of any issue BEFORE you reach your conclusions. That would mean not approaching an issue with your mind made up in advance (try it, it's refreshing!). |
