Description: My dear friend Wendy has trained thousands of women in practical theology through her teaching ministry. I am delighted to see her helpful wisdom now being made available to many more women through this book.” Mark Driscoll, Pastor and Founder, Mars Hill Church; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; President, Resurgence Have you ever wanted to understand the deep things of the Word but been put off by the intimidating vocabulary of theologians? Have you assumed that studying the attributes of God is for seminary students only? Or maybe “just for men”? Have heavy doctrinal themes felt beyond you and your everyday world? If so—if you’ve ever thought theology was too deep, too impractical, or too irrelevant for your life as a woman—this book is for you. As author Wendy Alsup explores fundamental theological issues you’ve always wondered about—minus the daunting vocabulary and complex sentence structure of academic tomes—she brings them into real life… into your world… and reveals the heart of true theology. It’s really about “simple yet incredibly profound stuff that affects our daily lives,” she says. Stuff like faith and gaining a right knowledge of God as the foundation for wise daily living. Alsup writes: “Truly, there is nothing like a good grasp of accurate knowledge about God to enable you to meet the practical demands of your life—the practical demands of being a daughter, mother, wife, sister, or friend.” Let Practical Theology for Women show you the everyday difference that knowing God makes.

Review Summary: Small Book with Big Ideas |

Details: A new book is now available, published by Crossway Books, and is an absolute must read for all women, Practical Theology for Women by Wendy Horger Alsup. It's a small book with a lot of big theology, but nothing a woman (or man) doesn't need to know. One particular matter she addresses I also believe is extremely important for women to grasp. She writes,
...instead of seeing ourselves as connected to Christ at all times, we tend to view our relationship with God in terms of intersecting moments during the day. We think that the more times our lives intersect with God, the more 'spiritual' we are. In this paradigm, God goes on his way and I go my way until we intersect at another corner...Instead, we need to think of ourselves walking with Jesus continually...Christ is in you...holding you together at all times. (p. 96)
I continually meet women who say they agree with the author in this regard, but then they will often speak of their work or family life as something separate from their spiritual life, or they will speak of their devotional life as the spiritual quadrant where they go to find God, neglecting to recognize His presence in every other area of their life.
This is an excellent book for the young or mature woman in Christ. There is nothing about it that says "this book is for girls," so for those who typically avoid pink, frilly devotionals, this book is for you. I recommend moving from this book into more studies in systematic theology, but I affirm the impact this book will have on the thought life of everyone who reads it. It's very suitable for group studies and individual reading.

Details: Doctrine can be understood and should be applied to everyday life. This is an easy to read book that explains theology at an understandable level and shows how it relates to us in a very practical way. Read this to learn more about God of the Bible or as a refresher on who God is and how knowing Him should be reflected in the way we live our lives. I highy recommend this book. |

Review Summary: My Wife Writes a Review |
Date: 2008-10-17 |

Details: I asked my wife to read this book and give me a book review of it, and she willingly and graciously assented. So, these are her words, only lightly edited.
There are no pet issues, feel-good fuzzies, or cultural buzzwords in this book. It is not a book for the shallow Christian, yet it is understandable enough for any who desire to grow and benefit from it. This book is solidly biblical, very challenging, extremely practical, and amazingly conservative. In short, it is the book for women I have long bemoaned that all the others aren't. This woman must have read the Puritans, or at any rate, she knows their God. This book will make you think, but not overwhelm the "non-intellectual" types. Here are some quotations I found helpful:
My husband and boys can't be my idols. I can't pin all of my hopes for the future on their personal successes. It's not fair to them, and it keeps me from placing my hope for the future in God's hands. I must be a steward of my roles of wife and mom, not an idolater who looks to her husband and children for her sense of personal achievement. The same is true for you in whatever calling God has given you. Jesus must be our source of identity.
Instead of seeing ourselves as connected to Christ at all times, we tend to view our relationship with God in terms of intersecting moments during the day. We think that the more times our lives intersect with God, the more "spiritual" we are. In this paradigm, God goes on his way and I go on my way until we intersect at another corner later that day, week, month, or year. Instead, we need to think of ourselves walking with Jesus continually, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. If you are a believer, Christ is with you, in you, holding you together at all times. The goal is for us to be aware of that reality and live in light of it, for Christ warns us that apart from him we can do nothing (see John 15). (Taken from pp. 96-97) |
