Description: Elisabeth Elliot's story centers around one pivotal question: "Does God want everything?" Her emphatic answer--"Yes"--is what makes Passion and Purity the foremost Christian book on dating ever written. Based on stories, journal entries, and letters chronicling her own five-year courtship with Jim Elliot, she gives frank advice, scriptural directives, and compassionate examples of what it means to follow Christ in the midst of heartache and impatience. The perfect antidote for those who flounder in the thinking that "the Bible doesn't say anything about dating," Elliot's short chapters are filled with nuggets of wisdom that spell out exactly the opposite. "Until the will and the affections are brought under the authority of Christ, we have not begun to understand, let alone accept His lordship. The Cross, as it enters the love live, will reveal the heart's truth." Whether in a dating relationship, married, or pursuing a call to single life, readers will find Elliot's message challenging them to a true faith in a Christ who lovingly calls us to surrender all. --Courtenay Kehn

Review Summary: Not Just About Dating Date: 2008-12-22

Details: I was told to read this book as a HighSchooler by some conservative friends of my parents. I resisted! I thought I knew what it was going to say and it was annoying to me to have so many ultra conservative viewpoints shoved at me during those times. I never picked it up and pretty much vowed to never read it!

Then I moved onto the mission field as a single woman in her 20's and a friend loaned me the book. I reluntantly started reading it. I was so suprised! This book to me was really not just about dating or "finding a man". It has so much wisdom in it about simply living all out for the Lord. I love her heart to see young women passionate about JESUS, about God, and not about themselves or finding a relationship.

Yes, Mrs. Elliot's conservative ideas of dating and women are bound to strike some more "enlightened" readers as old fashioned or backward but in our day of the hyper-sexulization of everything from soap commercials to the evening news why is this view point such a terrible thing? I would rather my daughter WAIT patiently for the Lord to lead her into a relationship than follow in the agressive, impatient and so-called progressive model of a modern-day woman that Hollywood puts forth.

I love this book not so much for its advice on dating but because of it's focus on putting the Lord first. It puts forth an amazing standard and an amazing challenge to be holy as Christ is holy. This is not an easy or popular message but it is the message that Jesus brought to us. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a challenge to walk more closely with Him.

Review Summary: Timeless Truths Date: 2008-12-08

Details: Passion and Purity came to my attention on the sale table at a Christian radio website. Of course it is not coincidental, but providential. I am a born-again divorced Christian in my 50's. I had been praying that God would clearly (like neon signs) show me His will for my life. I definitely had not been praying for another husband. But surprise, it seems that God has now arranged a marriage for me and He is giving me the signs that it is in His will. I am trying to resist God's will as I fight my stubborn pride that I am fine, thank you very much, as a single person. This precious little book has come to me in perfect timing. Elisabeth's writing is exquisite and so lovely. She includes lots of quotes from the old hymns and from old poetry that used such beautiful, perhaps quaint, language. I had to slow down my reading to savor each word, each phrase. This book's message will seem antiquated to the people who've bought into the current lack of morals and restraints in relationships. But it is a timeless and convicting truth that God has designed sexuality to be an indescribably awesome and divine experience when expressed within the boundaries of a marriage. Taken out of it's Creator's intent, sex becomes meaningless and spiritually void. I love this little book and I definitely will recommend it to everyone. It is a delightful little gem in a pool of deception.

Review Summary: Passion and Purity + My Experience Date: 2008-12-05

Details: I only know of one other person like me in this situation. If we were of the same race except for looks I'd say he was my double. We were even like best friends at one time. So what did we have that was so common? We both wanted a wife. I mean this guy tried and tried and tried more than anyone else I knew except for myself. He had more girls that he hung around as friends than anyone else I knew except for myself. There was one girl that we both liked and she had an outstanding personality as well as good looks. She always treated us both so nice. I think I got the prize as for as time to spend with her. We even ended up living only a block from each other at one time. For eight whole years I hung around this girl hoping and dreaming. At the same time I joined one of those on-line date clubs and wrote over 700 long letters to woman across the USA as well as other parts of the world. In addition to all that I also joined 3 to 4 singles groups. I was so determine that I was going to "make something happen with someone."

It wasn't until I read Elizabeth Elliot's book: "Passion and Purity" that I decided to stop trying and spend more time doing what I do best, playing the piano and writing music. Right after me quite all those groups including hanging out with someone that I was never going to marry that I produced my first CD, "The Wedding Feast." The funny thing is that I performed the CD live in another country 2 years later and met my wife.
