Review Summary: Comprehensive, Theologically Rigourous Work on Living in Restored Community Date: 2008-11-19
 
Details: This book is very theologically and academically rigorous. I hadn't done a lot of reading theological reading since college, so some of it was a bit thick to wade through (he references a lot of other theologians on his way to the points he's making), but it is so very much worth it. He addresses race, ethnicity, gender, oppression, and redemption with a way that connects to the heart of the Christian Gospel message, yet he writes about these topics in a way that someone who is not religious would appreciate.

I also really appreciated this book because he provides the best analysis of liberation theology that I've heard to date by anyone within the Christian community. Although he ultimately disagrees with it, he affirms its good points while aiming his readers towards a better, higher ideal vision.

I've recommended this book to almost everyone I know since I started reading, because I think it does a superb job of exploring everything the title promises. I read a quote from the book about 6 years ago, and it's been transformative in the way I try to interact with others, and the rest of the book has been so helpful in helping me to think through how my faith calls me to live with others.

Details: The book is in great shape and it was the best price, but it got to me way late. However, the lateness was likely because of problems with UPS and my moving. Even without the UPS problems, it was one of the latest arriving books I ordered online from several sellers at the same time.

Details: What a fantastic book Miroslav Volf wrote. This comes from his struggle to deal the effects of the war in his native land of Croatia. Prof Volf is right on when he makes the move to deal with ones willingness to embrace ones enemy just as God, in Christ, moved towards sinful humanity to embrace us. It can be somewhat of a difficult read, but it is worth it. I would recommend that every minister, theologian, and ministrial student read this book.
