Review Summary: Good Friend Date: 2008-10-27

Details: It's been a week since my ladies' group and I completed our study of the Organic God. I'm still reminiscing over what I like best, and frankly, its been hard to choose. There are so many facets of God that Margaret discusses, and she's some how made my relationship with Him simpler, clearer, and truly more Organic. Her book, and study, are not the traditional workbook with five days of homework. Rather, she's organized our walk together more like sitting down as dear friends, while sharing together what our own walks with God are like. As the Proverb goes, iron sharpens iron, I have been sharpened by her keen insight, humor and wit. I've found that as I have enjoyed the pages of this book that I've come closer to making a sweet friend whom I adore greatly, one that I'll turn to again and again for wise counsel as I continue to seek God's face. Margaret, thanks for such a sweet book. Thanks for bringing me closer to the God I love! I'll be back often. ;-)

Review Summary: See God With New Eyes Date: 2008-10-06

Details: I purchased several books, Leader's Guide and Study Books of The Organic God, by Margaret Feinberg, for a Women's Study at my church. Not only was it received expectantly, but every woman in the study looks forward to each new week. We have almost completed the six-week study and now I must look for another study that is most comparable. All of us have grown in our view of God without the pollution of worldly additives. I highly recommend this book.

Review Summary: Great Metaphors! Date: 2008-09-24

Details: Through her personal stories and metaphors for life, Feinberg creates a wonderful set of chapters to meditate on and push you to grow in your relationship with God. It has several fun features too--an offer to correspond over email about what you love about Jesus, a song list, reading ideas, and quirky footnotes. I read this book in two days it was so great and engaging. Now I need to go back and read it again! As a single woman--this book really helped me put God back in the husband spot in my heart. Thank you!

Review Summary: Organically Ok Date: 2008-09-18

Details: I picked up this book at our book drop for a little over a buck, and, wanting to read something by this author, decided that this was probably a good chance.

The premise of the book is that our hectic world craves simplicity, and that faith could be the starting point with that, but to accomplish this we must take our view of God and strip it of all the, "additives, pollutants, and other distractions." When we do this we will have the Organic God.

Each chapter is set up the same way. The author begins by telling a story or two of her personal experiences. She then accompanies that with scripture that she has found to be relevant to the point she is about to make. Then she makes her point, and adds another story.

The goodness of this book lies in its practical approach to life/faith. Although they are mostly cliches, they are still vital, I think, in a world that has lost the majority of it's faculty that is able to comprehend the simple. For example, "[God] doesn't give us what we ask for, or even what we need. He gives us more"(p.31). "Its [pain] presence is a gift from God"(p.105). "Care for those who have less than you" (p.146). "Kindness makes itself real in the smallest actions" (p.163). Most of these are "hidden gems" found within the pages of her book.

Some other highlights are the authors stories. All of them are well written, and relate to the topic of the chapter. Her story of taking a class under Maya Angelou, and other brief stories of her transient upbringing are rather interesting. Her word choice is quite nice as well.

A couple of things that didn't sit well with me were the constant, yet subtle reminder of her writing success, "maybe I'm just jealous." But it's one thing to be a successful writer, it's another thing to have a writer write about writing. She also went back and forth between "the Organic God" and "God." To an average reader this could become confusing as her exposing of our supposed miscontrued view of "God" was rather brief. Lastly, each of her chapters were titled with an alluring adjective, "breathtakingly beautiful," "amazingly wise," etc. This just seemed a little odd to me. I know God is deserving of all adjectives, but do his adjectives deserve adjectives? Possibly so. If that's the case should we keep going on and on when the point is pretty clear? Or if he's supposed to be Organic and "stripped" of all else wouldn't He simply be God? (At least it made me think of that)

Being a twenty-something, I was hoping this book would be directed towards me, but there was not much of a challenge there. The reading style is easy, and the concepts are simple and commonsensical, so maybe pre-teen girls/guys? I'm not sure, but I wouldn't recommend this book to any of my peers. Sorry, she means well, I certainly see that, but it doesn't work for me at this time.

Review Summary: A Refreshing Book Date: 2008-09-03

Details: Margaret Feinberg provides a comprehensive view of God's nature (insomuch as any human can do so), combining doctrinal and emotional qualities with a refreshing style devoid of cant. It served to reawaken in me a deeper hunger for God.
