Description: THE CHRISTIAN SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION brings together contemporary theological insights into the unity of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist which together form the introduction to Christian sacramental life. They express and make present the much deeper and more fundamental reality of Jesus as the prime sacrament and the Church as the fundamental sacramental expression in which all individual sacraments find their basis.

Fr. Osborne presents the best biblical, ecumenical and modern sacramental thinking for creating a sacramental theology rooted in the thinking of the Second Vatican Council. It combines the theological with the important spiritual and liturgical dimensions of sacramental preparation, and is designed for those engaged both in teaching sacraments and in preparing others for their reception.

Description: The customs and traditions associated with a pope's death have changed quite a bit from the time when popes were buried in the underground catacombs of Rome. Various ceremonies, rites, and rituals that were fundamentally similar developed over time, but a formal procedure for the death of the pope wasn't initiated until the early fourteenth century, and even then, the protocol wasn't always followed to the letter. This comprehensive reference book provides information on the deaths, funerals, and burial places of each pope from St. Peter (Apostle) to John Paul I. Among some of the most interesting are the deaths of Innocent X, who was almost gnawed by rats because no one would bury him; Alexander VI, who was stuffed into an old carpet and pummeled into his coffin; and Formosus, whose corpse was physically put on trial. The Introduction presents a brief history of papal funerals and tombs, and also covers modern burials. The author also explains such details as why a pope can only be declared dead when he is tapped with a hammer three times, why a pope must be embalmed (and how strangely some popes have been embalmed throughout history), and why three bags of coins and a brass cylinder are buried with the pope.

Description: Liturgy and catechesis should happen together. We've brought together liturgists, catechists, pastoral ministers, and academic experts to address how a parish might pastorally care for families who are bringing their children to the Church for Baptism. These essays discuss pre-education, training for catechists, timing of the rites, and the homily. But it doesn't stop there: mystagogy and follow-up are addressed, too. Published by Liturgy Training Publications.

Description: Compelling reflection on the theological significance of a major English poet.

Volume 26 in the Louvain Theological and Pastoral Monographs series explores the theological aesthetics of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Philip A. Ballinger unpacks the crucial terms INSCAPE and INSTRESS and shows how Hopkins was deeply influenced by John Ruskin, Ignatius of Loyola, and John Duns Scotus. In unfolding Hopkins's vision of the "poem as sacrament," Ballinger provides fresh insight into Hopkins's sense of mystery, his general theory of words, and his "Christic Rhyme Principle."
