Description: This comprehensive meticulously documented collection of scholarly articles presents indisputable evidence that a readily discernible and uniquely Islamic antisemitism has been expressed continuously since the advent of Islam. The contributors show that the "Koran" itself is a significant source of hostility towards Jews as well as other foundational texts.

Description: In his lifetime, the prophet Muhammad was viewed more as a wise sage (favored in the eyes of God, albeit) than as a saintly figure beyond worldly concern. The reason is evident in the pages of Wisdom of the Prophet, a selection of passages from the Hadith that record Muhammad's sayings and actions. Anyone wishing to understand Islamic spirituality or seeking a holy path of one's own can turn to passages such as "God is kind and loves kindness, and grants to kindness what is not granted to harshness," or "There are five kinds of martyrs: One who dies of plague; one who dies of a disease of the stomach or intestines; one who drowns; one who is crushed in a collapsing building; and one who is martyred in the way of God." Some passages are not exactly crystal clear, however, and one is not sure if something has been lost in translation or if they are simply in need of a little cross-cultural commentary. For instance: "[T]he Hour will not take place until two parties fight each other with one and the same aim." Nonetheless, the themes of charity, faith in God, service, and fairness stand out, and make The Wisdom of the Prophet a good entry into the richness of Islam. --Brian Bruya

Description: The sense of urgency to spread the gospel to Muslims has never been greater. Many Christians are turning new attention to the teachings of the Quran-yet few know even the basics of the Hadith, collections of Muslim teachings and traditions with deep influence on Muslim attitudes and actions. Phil Parshall's careful analysis of the Hadith is made authentic by his decades of ministry among Muslims. He explains the Hadith's teachings of Muhammad on such issues as salvation, prayer, jihad and violence, women, and Jesus. Here are essential insights for all those seeking an in-depth understanding of the Muslim faith and community.

Description: Noted Indian writer and polymath Ram Swarup explores the meaning of Islam through the words of the Sahih Muslim, considered by Muslims to be one of the most authoritative of the collections of 'traditions' (Arabic Hadith) about the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Like the Koran, these traditions are believed to be divinely revealed by Allah and they complement the verses of the Koran, in many cases expanding upon them and explaining the context of their revelation. As Swarup notes in his introduction, to Muslims the Hadith literature represents the Koran in action, stories of 'revelation made concrete in the life of the Prophet'. Among the orthodox they are considered as sacred as the Koran itself. To non-Muslims this work provides many insights into the mindset of the average Muslim who is raised on these traditions about Muhammad. It also underscores the gulf that exists between the sanctum of orthodox Islam and an increasingly secularised Westernised world.

Description: One of the most important books on the topic, this ground-breaking work offers unique insight into the role of the Quran, and Hadith, in modern-day Islam. Hadith, a collection of sayings attributed to the prophet Muhammad, have long been accepted alongside the Quran, as integral to Islamic thought and practices. This book exposes the damage it has done. A must read for all students of Islam.

Description: Book Description:
"Hadith are oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Hadith collections are regarded as important tools for determining the Sunnah, or Muslim way of life, by all traditional schools of jurisprudence. The Arabic plural is aḥadith. In English academic usage, hadith is often both singular and plural." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Description: This is a substantially expanded edition of the author's seminal work "The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourses: A Contemporary Case Study". Beginning with the case study of a Muslim basketball player who refused to stand up while the American national anthem was playing, the author documents the disintegration of the Islamic juristic tradition, and the prevalence of authoritarianism in contemporary Muslim discourses. The author analyzes the rise of what he describes as puritan and despotic trends in modern Islam, and asserts that such trends nullify the richness and diversity of the Islamic tradition. By declaring themselves the true soldiers of God and the defenders of religion, Muslim puritan movements are able to degrade women, eradicate critical thinking, and empty Islam of its moral content. In effect, the author argues, the self-declared protectors of Islam become its despots and oppressors who suppress the dynamism and vigor of the Islamic message. Anchoring himself in the rich Islamic jurisprudential tradition, the author argues for upholding the authoritativeness of the religious text without succumbing to authoritarian methodologies of interpretation. Ultimately, the author asserts that in order to respect the integrity of the Divine laws it is necessary to adopt rigorous analytical methodologies of interpretation, and to re-investigate the place of morality in modern Islam.
