Description: In today's mental health services, there is a pressing need for practitioners to place greater emphasis on working with users of services and to use skills which have a sound theoretical basis. This book focuses on evidence-based practices but reflects that in mental health, the best evidence is the personal experience of the user. This book seeks to guide, plan and suggest down-to-earth treatment ideas for individuals on a day to day basis. There are many publications which explore theoretical aspects of service delivery or provide an in-depth analysis of specific clinical interventions. However, how practitioners comprehensively amalgamate theory with their practice is often missing. This book fills that gap.

Description: Quality of life issues are particularly important for those who have the least control over their environment. Since quality of life consists of both affective and cognitive components, individuals with significant cognitive deficits, such as dementia patients, in turn experience decreased levels of well-being. Since these individuals are unable to verbalize their psychological discomfort, their frustrations are often displayed as agitation and other problem behaviors. Historically, the treatment approaches such as the use of chemical and physical restraints to decrease problem behaviors have been proven unsuccessful, at times counter-therapeutic, and even dangerous to the patient. This book suggests therapeutic approaches to quality of life issues which are creative and innovative, while at the same time patient-focused and cost effective. The ten approaches described are divided into two groups: general strategies and specific approaches. The general strategies include overall techniques such as Habilitation, Lifestyle Approach, Sheltered Workshop and Functional Techniques. The specialized approaches focus on various activities specifically designed for this population, such as validation therapy, simulated presence therapy, music therapy, Snoezelen, and light therapy.

Description: Living with Illness: Psychosocial Challenges focuses on developing and strengthening understanding of the illness experience. It encourages students to critically appraise conventional approaches to understanding and caring for those who are ill, to empower readers to off true holistic care and to, where appropriate, change nursing practice in light of current research findings. Traditionally nurses have drawn on knowledge from sociology and psychology as two separate but related disciplines to nursing, leaving the beginning level nurse to relate, integrate and translate knowledge gained into nursing practice. Living with Illness combines, in a unique way, sociological and psychological perspectives to creatively represent psychosocial knowledge that is innovative and directly applicable to contemporary nursing practice.
- Provides a fresh innovative approach to the teaching of psychosocial nursing through extensive use of nursing research and theory.
- Emphasis will be the voices of those living with illness with extensive use of case studies to illustrate theoretical perspectives being discussed.
- Examines how people's experiences with health and illness are influenced by families, communities and health care systems.
- Provides link between foundations of sociology, psychology and nursing practice.

Description: Completely updated for easier use and more control, VCE Pacific View is a groundbreaking workbook/CD-ROM package that brings learning to life in a "virtual" hospital setting. This guided learning experience features textbook reading assignments that correspond with the CD-ROM and workbook activities. The workbook acts as a map, guiding students through the CD-ROM as they care for patients in the virtual hospital to help students make connections between what they experience through the CD-ROM and what they've learned in their textbook. Each virtual hospital visit allows the student to access realistic information resources essential to patient care resulting in a true-to-life, hands-on learning experience. Users will also discover that this edition of VCE is easier to use with the inclusion of flash-based technology and the elimination of previously needed third-party plug-ins.
- Meaningful, real-world problems place users in nursing scenarios where they can set priorities for care, collect data, analyze and interpret data, and reach conclusions about complex problems within a health-illness transition.
- The highly-engaging format encourages active learning and provides opportunities to identify information to collect and process data for evidence-based patient care; work with data entry and retrieval screens; optimize use of available information resources; understand hospital information systems; manage information for decision-making; and maintain and improve core computing skills.
- Lessons in the workbook complement the content in the textbook and guide the student through the virtual hospital.
- Includes NCLEX examination-style questions that offer built-in testing of clinical knowledge.
- The CD-ROM offers users the opportunity to visit each patient and access realistic information essential for patient care, including: charts, medical administration records, electronic patient records, video clips of nurse-client interactions, and other related materials.
- A clock icon appears under each lesson, estimating how much time it will take to complete.
- A linkage icon alerts the user whenever they are about to begin an exercise that connects with previous lessons.
- The elimination of third-party plug-ins facilitates fast and easy software installation.
- Flash-based technology allows for more ease of use and seamless navigation.
- Greater faculty support with the addition of the FAC PAC, a new instructors' website, and a radically expanded testing component.
- A medication administration feature enables users to select, prepare, and administer medications.
- Over 50 common medication errors imbedded within the software to boost clinical realism and prepare students for current practice.
- A Medication Room that contains a wide variety of drug storage areas, such as a Unit Dosage Cabinet, Automated Dispensing System, IV Storage, and a Refrigerator.
- 6 unique patients/cases, each with complex medical-surgical conditions for students to care for and monitor within the virtual hospital.

Description: Prescribing Mental Health Medication is a text for nursing and medical practitioners who are learning how to diagnose and treat mental disorders with medication. Skills-based, it focuses on such key issues as: how to start and stop medication, how to dose, when to change medication, specific illnesses and their medications, special populations and conditions, the management of side effects, practical issues such as monitoring medication with blood levels, and administrative issues such as record-keeping.
Special icons used throughout the text highlight clinical tips, advice on how to talk to patients and differences in practice in primary care settings. Based on the author's considerable experience of training nursing and medical staff, Prescribing Mental Health Medication presents complex topics in an organized, logical and easily assimilated format. It provides a supportive text for those new to prescribing and a comprehensive source of reference for more experienced practitioners or teachers.
