Description: [A]n attempt is made to distinguish the essential from the non-essential in each religion... For every religion in the course of time suffers from accretions due to ignorance not to wisdom, to blindness not to vision. -from the Foreword

Anne Besant was one of the most popular and beloved voices of the theosophical movement of the early 20th century, and here she turns that occult philosophy, which sought to find the underlying universal truths in all religions, on religion itself. This series of lectures, published in book form in 1906, was intended to help members of each religion recognize the beauty and truth in the faiths not his own.

On Hinduism's "complete presentment of spiritual truth," Zoroastrianism's "perfect practical purity," the secret of the Buddha, and the spirit of Jesus' teachings, she is passionate and enlightening in demonstrating the primal essence that unifies them all.

Description: Although the first proper Notre Dame commencement - conferring degrees on two candidates - took place in 1849, General William Tecumseh Sherman was Notre Dame's first graduation speaker with a truly national reputation. He attended Notre Dame's ceremony in 1865, just months after accepting the surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate army. Sherman, whose sons had been students at Notre Dame, came less to give an address than to utter words of thanks for the kindness shown to his family, who had found refuge in the area during the war. When prevailed upon to speak he offered some extemporaneous remarks, calling on Notre Dame graduates and students to "be ready at all times to perform bravely the battle of life." "Go Forth and Do Good: Memorable Notre Dame Commencement Addresses" brings together 24 notable graduation speeches, ranging from the words General Sherman delivered in 1865 to President George W. Bush's remarks in 2001. Also included in this collection is a letter sent to 1986 graduates by Mother Teresa and Father Theodore M. Hesburgh's final charge to the graduating class of 1987. Wilson D. Miscamble, C.S.C., provides a introduction that clarifies the importance of the selected speeches, and places them in the context of the history of both Notre Dame and the world. A brief biographical introduction and photograph of the speaker precede each address.

Description: The centuries old Persian poem 'Mar Nameh' describes in verse a method of augury; what seeing a snake on every one of the 30 days of a month will mean and what omen it will portend. The thirty-two couplets in Persian informative rhyme are shown here in beautifully handwritten Persian calligraphy. The poem is both translated and transliterated into English. The symbolic connection of the snake to Time is discussed and a modern approach to use the 'Mar Nameh' is described using the Zoroastrian Calendars. The Old Iranian calendar describes in detail the foundation of Persian calendar system and its ancient festivals, such as the New Year celebration of Nawruz, the Tiragan festival, and the feast of Mithra. The connection of the Persian calendar to the Egyptian and Babylonian calendars is also examined in depth. This book provides a detailed analysis of a text which has been dormant for several hundred years. It is an essential read for all who are interested in the art of divination.
