Description: Throughout the colonial era, New England's only real public spokesmen were the Congregational ministers. One result is that the ideological origins of the American Revolution are nowhere more clearly seen than in the sermons they preached. The New England Soul is the first comprehensive analysis of preaching in New England from the founding of the Puritan colonies to the outbreak of the Revolution. Using a multi-disciplinary approach--including analysis of rhetorical style and concept of identity and community--Stout examines more than two thousand sermons spanning five generations of ministers, including such giants of the pulpit as John Cotton, Thomas Shepard, Increase and Cotton Mather, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Mayhew, and Charles Chauncy. Equally important, however, are the manuscript sermons of many lesser known ministers, which never appeared in print. By integrating the sermons of ordinary ministers with the printed sermons of their more illustrious contemporaries, Stout reconstructs the full import of the colonial sermon as a multi-faceted institution that served both religious and political purposes, and explicated history and society to the New England Puritans for one and a half centuries.

Description: Love and Violence offers a critical reading of the marriage metaphor in Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Lamentations, Isaiah, and the book of the Twelve Prophets as a means to depict the relationship between God and Israel established in the gender assumptions of the Bible. It examines the tension between the use of the marriage metaphor in ancient Israel and contemporary perspectives, and aids in the discovery, naming, and alleviation of violence—and its consequences—in Scripture and modern-day life. Chapters under Part I: The Prophetic Marriage Imagery: Research and Background are "Overview of Recent Scholarly Discussion and Definition of the Author’s Position," "Understanding the Imagery," "Marriage, Adultery, ‘Harlotry’: The Vocabulary of the Prophetic Marriage Imagery," "Theological Location of the Prophetic Marriage Imagery: Berit as a Related Idea," and "Ancient Near Eastern Ideas as Background for Prophetic Marriage Imagery." Chapters under Part II: Textual Studies are "Hosea: ‘Primal Text’ of the Prophetic Marriage Imagery," "Jeremiah: YHWH’s Marriages with Israel and Judah," "Ezekial: Climax of the Marriage Imagery," "Isaiah: Destruction for Babylon, Salvation for Zion," and "The Twelve Prophets: The Marriage Imagery Completed." Chapters under Part III: Summary and Conclusion are "The Marriage Imagery in the Individual Prophetic Books," "Dealing wth the Texts of the Prophetic Marriage Imagery: Critical Reading," "The Problem of the God-Image," and "A Look Ahead! ."

In addition, Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Bible are analyzed in regard to Pagan criticism.

Description: 1905. For more than three thousand years the name of Zoroaster was known around the world. Zoroastrian philosophy, which was the main religious belief system of ancient Iranians and for about several hundred years was the basis of the Iranian culture and their life style, now is almost forgotten. The name is the corrupt Greek form of the old Iranian Zarathustra. This is a study of Zoroaster by the scholar Whitney.
