Description: In this book, the author provides an insightful look at Confucianism and Christianity. The study argues that the religious philosophies of Wang Yang-ming and Karl Barth are actually similar views of a common issue. The issue is radical humanization. The author explains how Wang and Barth take one's commitment as the point of departure. He analyzes similarities in their articulation of this humanization, their views of evil, and their overall definition of radical humanity. "Wang Yang-ming and Karl Barth" provides a unique and balanced study of Confucianism and Christianity, avoiding tagging either religion as inferior or superior. This book will provide excellent reading for students, theologians, and scholars of religion as well as ministers who are interested in inter-religious dialogue and the theology of religion. It is also highly appropriate for graduate courses such as "Christianity and Other Religions," "The Gospel Across Culture," "The Theology of Karl Barth," and "Confucianism."

Description: Throughout history, numerous scholars and intellectuals have tried to define Confucianism one way or another. Despite their efforts, the voices of those who claim to have found the essence of Confucianism are as much at odds as ever. A Topography of Confucian Discourse analyzes Confucian discussion in diverse historical settings, examining how Confucianism has served the different purposes of biased interpreters and how they have manipulated Confucian discourse. To explore their hidden desires, Lee Seung-hwan critically observes various historical contexts in which people interpreted Confucianism: in the heyday of the Jesuit Missionaries, the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the period of Western Imperialism, late twentieth-century postmodern America, Tokugawa Japan, Chosŏn Korea, China, Taiwan, South Korea, as well as Singapore. The author successfully historicizes Confucian discourse, explaining why, against a certain political background, a certain view on Confucianism has to arise.

Description: Investigating the late sixteenth through the nineteenth century, this work looks at the shifting boundaries between the Choson state and the adherents of Confucianism, Buddhism, Christianity, and popular religions. Seeking to define the meaning and constitutive elements of the hegemonic group and a particular marginalized community in this Confucian state, the contributors argue that the power of each group and the space it occupied were determined by a dynamic interaction of ideology, governmental policies, and the group's self-perceptions. Collectively, the volume counters the static view of the Korean Confucian state, elucidates its relationship to the wider Confucian community and religious groups, and suggests new views of the complex way in which each negotiated and adjusted its ideology and practices in response to the state's activities.
