Description: The prayer of the heart is a spiritual practice that produces joy, inner peace, and a heart brimming over with love for all creation. This delightful account is the story of one man who sets out to learn the prayer of the heart--also known as the "Jesus prayer"--and how the practice transforms his existence. Its anonymous author was one of the wandering pilgrims who were a regular feature of the Russian countryside from medieval times up until the early twentieth century. Through his eyes we get a charming look at rural life in nineteenth-century Russia, and with him we discover the secret to putting into practice the words of St. Paul: "Pray without ceasing."

This SkyLight Illuminations edition guides you through an abridged version of the text with facing-page annotation explaining all the names, terms, and references for you. Including a glossary of terms as well as an annotated list of other resources, it provides interesting facts, demystifies theological language, and brings the text beautifully to life.

Description: Christianity arrived early in Egypt, brought -- according to tradition -- by Saint Mark the Evangelist, who became the first patriarch of Alexandria. The Coptic Orthodox Church has flourished ever since, with millions of adherents both in Egypt and in Coptic communities around the world. Since it split from the Byzantine Church in 451, the Coptic Church has maintained its early traditions, and influence from the outside has been minimal: the liturgy is still sung to unique rhythms in Coptic, a late stage of the same ancient Egyptian language that is inscribed in hieroglyphs on temple walls and papyri.

Dr. Otto Meinardus, an authority on the history of the Coptic Church, has revised, updated and combined his studies, "Christian Egypt, Ancient and Modern" (AUC Press 1965 and 1977) and "Christian Egypt, Faith and Life" (AUC Press, 1970) into a new, definitive, one-volume history for the Millennium, surveying the 20 centuries of existence of one of the oldest churches in the world.

Description: Deification in the Greek patristic tradition was the fulfillment of the destiny for which humanity was created - not merely salvation from sin but entry into the fullness of the divine life of the Trinity. This book, the first on the subject for over sixty years, traces the history of deification from its birth as a second-century metaphor with biblical roots to its maturity as a doctrine central to the spiritual life of the Byzantine Church. Drawing attention to the richness and diversity of the patristic approaches from Irenaeus to Maximus the Confessor, Norman Russell offers a full discussion of the background and context of the doctrine, at the same time highlighting its distinctively Christian character.
