Description: This concise work is a classic exposition of how the Christian Church has venerated the Mother of God throughout the ages, and the chief errors which have attacked this veneration. It clearly tells why the Virgin Mary should be honored by all generations, but not considered a co-redemptress along with Jesus Christ, the only Savior of the world. "For He hath looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden; for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed." (Luke 1:48) A right understanding of Jesus Christ, the Son of God is not possible without a right understanding of Mary, the Birthgiver of God. When her image is distorted, the image of her Son also becomes distorted. The sources of Archbishop John's theology are, quite simply, Holy Scripture, the Holy Fathers (especially the great Fathers of the 4th and 5th centuries), and--most distinctively--the Divine services of the Orthodox Church. The latter source offers a clue to the practical approach of St. John to theology. From Apostolic times, all who truly love Christ give veneration to her who gave birth to Him, raised Him and protected Him in the days of His youth. In THE ORTHODOX VENERATION OF MARY THE BIRTHGIVER OF GOD, St. John traces her veneration from the time of the Apostles to the present.

Description: For more than fifteen hundred years Christianity has cultivated a rich and varied teaching on the practice of stillness and inner calm. Here we can find answers to the contemporary psychological struggle for inner peace. In a fresh and engaging reading of this ancient contemplative spirituality, Jean-Yves Leloup explores the writings of many spiritual masters from across the centuries. In particular he focuses on the Desert Fathers, the fourth-century monk Evagrius, St. John Cassian, and the anonymous 19th-century author of The Way of the Pilgrim. Drawn from the experience of the monasteries of Sinai and Mount Athos, here is a clear and practical presentation of the spiritual art of arts: stillness in the face of interior pain and confusion. This book: --demonstrates that peace in the world begins with peace in the heart. --is gracefully written for everyday readers.

Description: Fr. Dumitru Staniloae provided a broad basis for pursuing an intellectual dialogue with modern society, especially in the area of the humanities, and armed with such a perspective, he went beyond a mere cultural or sociological understanding of Orthodoxy. Because each generation - and not just that of St. Maximus the Confessor - has its own Ambigua, the theological heritage too must submit to the hermeneutic of renewal and development, which in turn leads to a new form of transmission - Tradition. For Fr. Staniloae, this exegetical openness of the Tradition is the genius of Orthodoxy. Fr. Staniloae was convinced that any theological development of the theme of the World represents in fact a new discovery of the active presence of God in human history and cosmic creation. Theological reflection leads to the experience of God, and vice-versa. Theology is a witness to the presence of God, and it implies a moral and spiritual responsibility.

Description: The wonderful title of this book gives a glimpse into its subject: a life at the crossroads of everyday life in America and the timeless rituals in a Christian Orthodox service. Full of information about this ancient church, Mathewes-Greene--author of Facing East and a columnist for Christianity Today--uses a style that is both quirky and intellectual, moving easily from the conversational ("this wasn't one of those woo-woo spiritual experiences where everything goes misty") to references to great Orthodox theologians and rich, Annie Dillard-like prose. One example is her brief description of a young man she saw in California who believed he was Christ: "This is just someone's boy, someone's dreamer, who grabbed a sheet out of the linen closet and walked out of the suburbs, a nice young man breaking someone's heart, lost and gliding over the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains in a private plane of bliss." While bearing the hallmarks of a fairly recent convert to the faith (some readers will have to adjust to her celebration of orthodoxy at the expense of both Catholicism and Protestantism), the book makes a fine introduction to orthodoxy for contemporary readers. --Doug Thorpe

Description: "In a time when many traditional churches are drowning in a morass of new polysllabic hersies, it is a de-light to find this spirited defense of orthodoxy..I hope it will do for this generation what Chesterton and C.S. Lewis did in the first half of thise century". D.H.

Description: Christianity and monasticism have flourished along the Nile Valley in the Sohag region of Upper Egypt from as early as the fourth century until the present day. The contributors to this volume, international specialists in Coptology from around the world, examine various aspects of Coptic civilization in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag over the past seventeen hundred years. Many of the studies center on the person and legacy of the great Coptic saint, Shenoute the Archimandrite (348â466 CE), looking at his preserved writings, his life, his place in Pachomian monasticism, his relations with the patriarchs in Alexandria, and the life in his monastic system. Other studies deal with the art, architecture, and archaeology of the two great monasteries that he founded and the archaeological and artistic heritage of the region. Contributors: Heike Behlmer, Elizabeth Bolman, Anne Boudâhors, Andrew Crislip, Stephen Emmel, Cäcilia Fluck, James Goehring, Suzana Hodak, Dale Kinney, Rebecca Krawiec, Bentley Layton, Catherine Louis, Nina Lubomierski, Nashaat Mekhaiel, Samuel Moawad, Siegfried G. Description: On the basis of worship of the Orthodox Church, The Year of Grace of the Lord takes the reader through the Sundays and feast days from the beginning of the year in September to the time of its completion after Pentecost. It is a guide to the scriptural readings and prayers of the calendar year and reveals the spiritual growth in Christ that is opened to us in them. In the author's words, the liturgical year is "an abridgement of the history of salvation." A helpful list of reference notes, including historical and theological material, is given at the end of each chapter. This book will be of interest to anyone who wishes to know more about the development and pattern of the Orthodox liturgical year. "A Monk of the Eastern Church" is the well-known pseudonym for Father Lev Gillet (1893-1980), who authored numerous volumes of biblical and spiritual reflections. United to the Orthodox Church in 1928, Father Lev Gillet was deeply imbued with Eastern monastic spirituality. In 1948 he was appointed chaplain to the Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius, dedicated to the work of Christian unity.
