Description: Working with the concept of invented spelling, Wilde helps teachers discover the better ways to help children develop as readers and writers. - Writing Teacher To many teachers who began their careers with basal readers, the schwa sound was part of what led them to whole language in the first place. If they didn't even understand linguistic terminology themselves, how could they be expected to teach it to kids? Yet many teachers still wonder about letters and sounds and phonics. What role does phonics play in learning to read? Does it still have a place in classrooms where children are becoming literate through rich experiences with literature and writing? Why have the debates about phonics continued and in some ways grown more heated? In What's a Schwa Sound Anyway? Sandra Wilde answers these and many other questions related to phonics and its relationship to learning to read and spell. She makes a forceful case that teachers who have a working knowledge about the English sound system are not only more powerful observers of students' reading and invented spelling, but also more informed participants in the current debates about the role of phonics in learning to read. The first part of the book is a lively exploration of the English sound system and its relation to written language for both reading and spelling. This mini-course in linguistics is reader friendly and accessible to even the most linguistics-phobic classroom teacher. Of special interest to those who work with diverse populations is a chapter-length discussion of language variation such as Black English and its role in learning to read and spell. The second part of the book helps readers apply their new knowledge about sounds, letters, and the relationship between them to the classroom. Chapter 5, "Skills and the Big Phonics Debate," applies theory, research, and common sense to debates about the role of phonics in learning to read and spell. The next two chapters take a close look at a number of writing samples and reading miscues, illuminating how a knowledgeable teacher can appreciate "error" as a reflection of children's developing understandings of written language. Sandra Wilde's work with invented spelling has helped us discover that the better we understand what children are doing, the more responsive and creative we can be as teachers. What's a Schwa Sound Anyway? continues this work by helping teachers deepen and extend their knowledge base about written language and the way children perceive it, always with the goal of helping children continue to grow and develop as readers and writers.

Description: This book contains a selection of papers presented at the 9th Conference on Laboratory Phonology, which was held in June 2004 at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The theme of the conference was Change in Phonology, broadly conceived as to include both language evolution at the level of the speech community and development within the individual speaker/hearer. The chapters in this book are organized in five sections: phonological variation and change within the speech community, mechanisms of change in sound systems, phonological acquisition from different experimental perspectives, second language phonology, modeling of language variation, and segmental and suprasegmental phenomena related to the timing of speech gestures. These topics are explored from a number of perspectives, both within and outside of traditional linguistics. We believe that the papers included in this volume demonstrate that the Laboratory Phonology approach has reached maturity and has succeeded in its aim not only to bridge the gap between phonetics and phonology but also to establish a fruitful and mutually beneficial dialog between linguists and other scientists and scholars concerned with the study of the sound patterns of human language from different perspectives.

Description: Following the guidance of W. Sidney Allen, the recognized authority on Latin pronunciation, these two cassettes present authentic Latin speech, giving a taste of how everyday Latin might have sounded. The recorded extracts are spread over two cassettes and include many of the cartoon captions, Responde Latine questions, Fabellae, dramatized dialogues, and other short passages of narrative prose and verse that are found in Parts 1-3 of the course. For the Oxford Latin Reader there are longer extracts of prose and verse covering the principal authors of the Golden Age including Cicero, Catullus, Virgil, and Ovid. A full index of extracts is provided on the cassette inlay cards.

Description: Phonological Structure and Phonetic Form brings together work from phonology, phonetics, speech science, electrical engineering, psycho- and sociolinguistics. The chapters are organized in four topical sections. The first is concerned with stress and intonation; the second with syllable structure and phonological theory; the third with phonological features; and the fourth with "phonetic output." This volume will be important in making readers aware of the range of research relevant to questions of linguistic sound structure.

Description: The work published in Phonology and Phonetic Evidence presents an integrated phonetics-phonology approach in what has now become an established field, laboratory phonology. The volume is divided into three sections. Part I deals with the status and role of features in phonological representations; Part II, on prosody, contains among others two papers that present for the first time detailed acoustic and perceptual evidence on the rhythm rule; Part III, on articulatory organization, includes several papers that--from different perspectives--test hypotheses derived from articulatory phonology, thereby testifying to the great influence this theory has exerted in recent years.
