Language is always changing, and in Gallimaufry: A Hodge-Podge of Words Vanishing from Our Vocabulary Michael Quinion has gathered together some fascinating examples of words and meanings which have vanished from our language. Sometimes a word is lost when the thing it describes becomes obsolete, sometimes it survives in a figurative sense while the original meaning is lost, and sometimes it simply gives way to a more popular alternative. The story of these and many other words opens a window into the lives of past speakers of the English language.

Fully three-fifths of the roots are Latin, and a good share come from Greek too. There are also Scandinavian roots and roots from nine or so other languages. Following the history comes the comprehensive list of word stems, from "Abb" ("father, religious leader. Syriac, abba.") to "Zym" ("ferment. Greek, zumoo."), defining and deciphering thousands of the most commonly used foreign words that form the foundation of English.

Description:
What do the phrases “pro-life,” “intelligent design,” and “the war on terror” have in common? Each of them is a name for something that smuggles in a highly charged political opinion. Words and phrases that function in this special way go by many names. Some writers call them “evaluative-descriptive terms.” Others talk of “terministic screens” or discuss the way debates are “framed.” Author Steven Poole calls them Unspeak. Unspeak represents an attempt by politicians, interest groups, and business corporations to say something without saying it, without getting into an argument and so having to justify itself. At the same time, it tries to unspeak — in the sense of erasing or silencing — any possible opposing point of view by laying a claim right at the start to only one way of looking at a problem. Recalling the vocabulary of George Orwell’s 1984, as an Unspeak phrase becomes a widely used term of public debate, it saturates the mind with one viewpoint while simultaneously makes an opposing view ever more difficult to enunciate. In this fascinating book, Poole traces modern Unspeak and reveals how the evolution of language changes the way we think.

gymnasium was originally a "nude practice area"? Or that nachos are
named after Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, who created them? The fascinating
stories of these words and over three hundred more are told in More Word
Histories and Mysteries: From Aardvark to Zombie.

In this companion to the popular Word Histories and Mysteries:
From Abracadabra to Zeus, the most surprising stories in the history of
English vocabulary are told as a series of brief notes written in a lively and
entertaining style. Conveniently arranged in alphabetical order, the notes
explore all corners of the dictionary, from everyday words like flak and
sideburns to scientific terms like nitrogen to regionalisms like lagniappe.
The history of many words is traced back to Egypt, India, and other
ancient cultures.

A short introduction sketches the history of the English language
and American regional dialects. A handy glossary defines special terms
for readers who wish to learn more about linguistics and also gives information
about the exotic languages that have enriched our vocabulary.
Photographs and drawings enliven the pages and illuminate the understanding
of word histories.
