Description: This updated version of the 2000 original is still the only complete resource on the market for finding word parts needed to express a concept. Aside from catering to those who wish to expand their vocabulary, the purpose of this dictionary is to provide convenient word parts to those who may be interested in inventing or deciphering words bearing an established and embedded meaning. Like the first edition, this work is split into three parts presenting the prefixes, suffixes, combining forms, and roots that fit together to form words in English. Part I, the Dictionary proper, provides an alphabetical listing of nearly 4,700 word parts, each entry including a brief definition and two examples of words using that unit. This section benefits from several additions, the most notable of which are embedded etymologies for each entry. Part II, the Finder, is a reverse dictionary of word parts allowing users to start with a meaning or concept and then find word parts which express that meaning. Still the only reverse dictionary of its kind, Part II is updated with over 1,000 new search terms. Part III collects word parts in another reverse dictionary under 18 convenient categories. Each pre-existing category has been expanded when possible, and three entirely new categories have also been added (Eating, Experts, and Measurement Science).

Updated with all the latest must-know vocabulary, and with a completely revised text, this second edition is an invaluable tool for anyone who writes for work, school, or pleasure, or anyone looking for the word on the tip of their tongue. This thesaurus also contains Word Link features, helping you to find words that are closely associated with each other. For example, the Word Link at the entrylaw informs you that the words legal, judicial, and juridicial all relate to laws, and the Word Link at darkness reveals that the fear of darkness is called scotophobia.Packed with extra tips and help, and with a completely revised and up-to-date text, the Pocket Oxford Thesaurus is an ideal reference book for anyone who wants to improve their writing.

Description: Sometimes it seems that there are as many collections of archaic words as there are archaic words. Most of them are amusing in their own esoteric sort of way, but few aim for more than entertainment value. David Grambs watches over words gone (or going) by in the same way that the National Wildlife Federation watches over grizzly bears and timber wolves. He would like his readers to think of his Endangered English Dictionary as "a constant reminder of the words that could have been, that fell through the cracks. Or--" he challenges, "if you and enough others make imaginative use of this book--that still could become part of our everyday usage." Toward this goal, Grambs has chosen "common-use, nontechnical words," and he has arranged his book as a two-way dictionary. So if you are looking for a compact way to describe something--a flower, say--that smells strongest at night, try "noctuolucent." If you were a delicate blossom, or even a whole "tuzzymuzzy" (a bunch of flowers), you too might wish to avoid the "sizzard" (unbearably humid heat) of summer days. --Jane Steinberg

Description: From writing poems to writing birthday cards, and from the garret to the classroom, the Oxford Dictionary of Rhymes has what every writer (or budding writer) needs. It contains rhymes for 45,000 words, including proper names, place names, and foreign terms used in English. The organization and layout are remarkably clear, making the volume very easy to use, and there is a complete index for added ease of reference. In-text notes offer tips on using rhymes effectively, make suggestions for expanding the rhyming lists included in the book, and give examples of how poets, past and present, have used rhyme. The wide-ranging and accessible introduction offers a brief outline of rhyming in its literary and historical contexts, and gives further advice on creative writing. The design is contemporary and clear, making the Oxford Dictionary of Rhymes simple to navigate. In short, this is a must-have tool for writers of all kinds and a superb reference for English teachers, as well as a delight for everyone who likes to play with words.

Description: If you find yourself in perpetual pursuit of the perfect word, Random House Webster's College Thesaurus may earn a place as favorite bedside reading. From "alacrity" to "zeal," "altitude" to "zenith," this reference offers myriad options in the way of scintillating synonyms (as well as apt antonyms). Organized in a simple A-to-Z format, each word is also used in a sentence--with different sentences for distinct meanings of the word--to help eschew malapropisms. If you're still getting your sea legs in the ocean of current vocabulary, the feature on how to avoid offensive or insensitive language (a crash course in political correctness) should help prevent any embarrassing gaffs. And, for those who choose to teeter at the cutting edge of the lexicon, there's a section explaining new hipster words, such as "def," "dis," "phat," and "bloviate" (look it up!). With more than 12,000 main entry terms, 400,000-plus synonyms and antonyms, and the handy "Thumb Index," this revised and updated thesaurus is a reference no wordsmith should be without. --Brangien Davis
