Description: Half a decade after the Dominion War and more than a year after the rise and fall of Praetor Shinzon, the galaxy's greatest scourge returns to wreak havoc upon the Federation -- and this time its goal is nothing less than total annihilation. Elsewhere, deep in the Gamma Quadrant, an ancient mystery is solved. One of Earth's first generation of starships, lost for centuries, has been found dead and empty on a desolate planet. But its discovery so far from home has raised disturbing questions, and the answers harken back to a struggle for survival that once tested a captain and her crew to the limits of their humanity. From that terrifying flashpoint begins an apocalyptic odyssey that will reach across time and space to reveal the past, define the future, and show three captains -- Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise, TM William Riker of the U.S.S. Titan, and Ezri Dax of the U.S.S Aventine -- that some destinies are inescapable.

Review Summary: Star Trek at its absolute best! |
Date: 2009-01-02 |
|
| |
Details: The Destiny trilogy is the pinnacle of ST novels, combining a suspenful storyline including a REAL Federation-wide threat(for the first time ever in ST literature, no character is safe!) with fantastic characterization for established and new characters.
Ever since the Star Trek novel line re-alligned in 2000-2001, the novels have kept a consistant continuity (which still allows readers to "jump in" in jus about every novel, without confusion), and the Destiny trilogy is the culmination of those last few years of stories. Don't be alarmed, though. You don't need to read every Trek novel out there to understand it all - far from it: These books provide ALL the information you'd need.
In closing, the entire trilogy is a top-notch work from Star Trek's greatest novelist today! |

Details: Fantastic! Several interweaving storylines extremely well put-together. I read all three in three days. David Mack's storytelling has reached a new level in this trilogy, to a level equal to Peter David. Although Ezri Dax as captain seemed a little odd, Mack puts all the pieces together with grace.
The trilogy's end also leaves the reader to wonder what the future holds. After reading several hundred Star Trek books, I can safely say that no story has been written like this for some time, maybe ever.
Read these books! |

Review Summary: David Mack is a Genius |

Details: (There are no plot spoilers in this review.)
This book is absolutely genius!
How David Mack intertwines characters from all over the Star Trek domain (across 4 of the TV series as well as several post-Nemesis novels) in an all new thrilling plot is beyond my comprehension. All of the characters are ring true 100% of the time, and you get a sense that you know them better after reading this book. The dramatic events of the story unfold through short snippets of scenes, bouncing between the different crews. As the plot progresses, you begin to see how everything is interconnected. Sometimes when an author tells a story like this, one set of characters is more interesting than the others, and you end up hating the other sections of the book. In the case of Gods of Night, this is definitely NOT the case. I loved every page of this novel.
Mack's writing style is perfect for his large-scale "epic" story line. The books seems to fly past you. No part of it is slow, monotonous, or redundant. He gives you the perfect amount of information in an easily accessible yet highly sophisticated manner. I found that after each chapter I needed a little break to let the events completely soak in -- not because it was difficult to understand, but because it was so easy to know what was going on that I wanted to replay the whole thing in my mind like a Star Trek episode.
If you haven't read the other post-Nemesis novels or seen much Star Trek, you might be turned off by a book that pulls on threads from all parts of the Trek tapestry. Not to worry, you will identify with the characters in no time. If you feel confused, simply refer to the handy appendix of characters and their ships in the back of the book.
Finally, beware that some of the events in this book are PG-13 material.
I highly suggest this book. It is truly a masterpiece. |
